LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Tulsa softball team faced Kansas in a doubleheader on Wednesday as part of the Rock Chalk Challenge, dropping both games 4-3 and 9-1.
The Golden Hurricane is now 14-13 on the season. The Jayhawks improve to 16-11 with the two wins. Tulsa had originally been scheduled for four games this weekend as part of the challenge, but due to incoming inclement weather, the Hurricane's participation was limited to the pair of games on Wednesday.
Maura Moore (8-4) had the start in the circle for game one and took the loss. The sophomore went the distance, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five Jayhawks.
Kylee Nash (6-7) was credited with the loss in the second game. She pitched four and a third while allowing seven runs, four earned, on eight hits. Nash struck out two batters in the game. Riley Grant also got some time in the circle in the final inning.
At the plate, Haley Morgan had all of Tulsa's RBI in game one with a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to give the Hurricane a chance to draw level. Claira Skaggs recorded a double.
Abby Jones had Tulsa's lone RBI in the second game, blasting her first home run of the season in the fifth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Tulsa 3, Kansas 4
Both teams threatened a couple of times in the first few innings but had nothing to show for it. Kansas finally broke the deadlock in the fifth inning. A one-out triple set the stage and a single drove in the run to make it 1-0.
After Tulsa failed to score in the sixth, Kansas added some insurance on the back of the long ball. A walk was rewarded by a two-run home run to make it 3-0. With two away, Sara Roszak hit a solo blast to increase the lead to 4-0, which would prove to be the winning run.
Morgan kept Tulsa's hopes alive in the top of the seventh. With two on and two out, the center fielder smashed a three-run home run to cut the deficit to a single tally, 4-3. Unfortunately, Tulsa was unable to capitalize from there.
GAME NOTES
» Morgan's second home run of the season gives her 15 RBI on the season, fourth on the team even though she bats leadoff.
» Tulsa was outhit 7-5 on the afternoon
» The Hurricane were 2-of-12 (.167) with runners on and only had one hit with a runner in scoring position
» Both teams stranded five runners.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Tulsa 1, Kansas 9 (Five Innings)
The Jayhawks wasted little time jumping out to an early lead in game two. With a runner on second and two outs, Tulsa issued three consecutive walks, which brought in the first run of the game.
Kansas added two more in the second inning thanks to some Tulsa miscues. With one away, Nash struck out a batter for what should've been the second out, but it got away for a passed ball, allowing the runner to reach first. After a single, Tulsa erased the initial runner thanks to a double steal attempt where Jones was alert to the runner racing third from home and fired to Emma Vickrey for the out at the plate.
Consecutive errors from the Tulsa defense brought in two runs to make the lead 3-0. The next batter, Olivia Bruno, doubled to bring in the fourth run of the ball game. Bruno was caught trying to steal third, ending the inning.
The teams held each other from scoring again until the fifth when Jones got Tulsa on the board with her first home run of the season. The second baseman took a 1-2 pitch over the wall in center, a solo blast, to cut the deficit to 4-1.
However, the Jayhawks put five across the plate in the bottom of the fifth. A walk-off three run homer off the bat of Hailey Cripe made the score 9-1 and ended the afternoon.
GAME NOTES
» Jones homered for the first time this season and third time in her career ... she is seventh different Hurricane to hit a home run in 2023.
» Tulsa was outhit 10-4 in the loss
» The Golden Hurricane also committed three errors while the Jayhawks didn't make any mistakes in the field.
» TU went hitless in its only two opportunities with runners in scoring position.
The next scheduled opponent for the Golden Hurricane is Missouri State on Wednesday, March 22. The midweek battle with the Bears in Springfield, Mo. is set for a 5 p.m. first pitch. The American is set to start conference play on Friday, March 24. However, Tulsa has a bye the opening weekend and won't play a conference game until the 31st when the Hurricane hosts Memphis at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
