SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ––The University of Tulsa softball team is set to take on Missouri State Wednesday afternoon at Killian Stadium in its only matchup of the week.
First pitch is set for 5 p.m. but there will be no livestream of the action.
The Golden Hurricane (14-13) has a bye this weekend and won't open conference play until the following weekend at home against Memphis. After last week's schedule was impacted due to bad weather, the Hurricane will have only played three games since hosting the Tulsa Invitational.
Wednesday is the 50th meeting between Tulsa and Missouri State (12-15, 3-2 MVC), with the Bears leading the series 26-23. The Hurricane has won 12 of the past 15 matchups in the series but are winless in the last two. The last meeting came on April 10, 2019 when MSU enjoyed a 3-2 win at home.
Thanks to the weather in Lawrence, Kan. last weekend, Tulsa's participation in the Rock Chalk Challenge changed from a weekend tournament to a midweek doubleheader against the Jayhawks. Tulsa dropped both matchups, falling 4-3 and then 9-1 in five innings.
Haley Morgan hit a three-run home run in the seventh of the opening game to give Tulsa a chance, but it was not enough as Kansas held on for the win. Abby Jones smashed a homer in game two for Tulsa's lone run. A five-run fifth lifted the Jayhawks to a walk-off win.
Tulsa is batting .287 this season with 201 hits, 12 home runs and 109 RBI. Morgan leads the team with a .407 batting average. Claira Skaggs and Kailyn Bearpaw share the RBI crown with 18, while Celeste Wood has driven in 17. Skaggs has added five home runs, three doubles and two triples while boasting a .615 slugging percentage.
In the circle, Maura Moore is 8-4 with a 2.84 ERA and 48 strikeouts. Junior Kylee Nash is 6-7 and has struck out 56 batters to lead the team. Nash also has been excelling at the dish, hitting .435 with 10 hits in 23 plate appearances. She's doubled twice and driven in six runs.
After Wednesday's matchup, Tulsa is off until Tuesday when the Golden Hurricane will visit Central Arkansas for a 5 p.m. first pitch. TU will then play host to the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in front of a sold-out Tulsa crowd at the Collins Family Softball Complex on Wednesday, March 29. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN+. The Hurricane will then welcome Memphis to open the American Athletic Conference season starting on Friday, March 30.
