TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa Softball team fell in the finale of its first American Athletic Conference series of the season 8-5 to the University of Memphis Sunday afternoon at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
A little more than 430 fans were on hand to watch the Golden Hurricane (16-17, 2-1 AAC) face the Tigers (6-29, 1-5). The Hurricane won the series 2-1 after taking the games on Friday and Saturday.
Kylee Nash (6-9) earned the start and was tagged with the loss. She pitched three innings of six-hit ball, allowing five runs, all earned, and struck out a batter. Maura Moore came on in relief and was responsible for three runs over four innings, striking out four.
Mikayla Hoschak (2-8) went the distance for the Tigers, picking up her second win of the season. She didn't walk any batters and struck out two. Both teams managed 12 hits and the Tigers committed a pair of errors while Tulsa was error free.
Haley Morgan had a three-hit game, which included a two-run home run. She also came around to score twice, the first and last of Tulsa's runs. MacKenzie Denson, Claira Skaggs and Nash each had two-hit days. Denson added an RBI to her afternoon, as did Kailyn Bearpaw and Rylee Keith.
Tiger catcher Meagan Chism had one of the bigger hits of the day for Memphis, delivering a bases-clearing double down the line in the third, which netted her three RBI. Shortstop Aliana Zavala had a three-hit day while scoring twice and adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers drew first blood in the second inning. A two-out single with a runner on second was enough to bring the runner in to break the deadlock.
Bearpaw nearly tied the game with the first at-bat of the bottom of the frame. She lifted a long fly ball to left but was robbed of the solo shot by the left fielder, who brought the ball back from over the fence. But the Hurricane continued to hit the ball hard. Skaggs singled and reached second after a hit batter, which set Keith up for the RBI single to tie the game at one.
It was a big third inning for the Tigers that separated the teams. It started with a lineout back to Nash in the circle, but then consecutive singles and a walk loaded the bags. The Tigers took the lead on a 2-1 RBI single. After a strikeout, Chism smashed a three-RBI double down the line in left, giving Memphis the 5-1 advantage.
Morgan singled to open the bottom of the third and advanced to second on a throwing error from the pitcher. She came around to score on a single up the middle from Denson, who showed her smart baserunning to advance to second as the throw came home. This allowed her to advance to third on a flyout and then score on a Bearpaw single to cut the lead to 5-3.
However, Tulsa couldn't keep Memphis off the board. Moore entered in the fourth and allowed back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position and a runner scored on a wild pitch before a foul out and strike out cut the threat short with Memphis now leading 6-3.
A dropped strike three to Keith put Tulsa in business in its half of the fourth. A potential double play turned into a fielder's choice after the second baseman threw the ball away, which kept a runner on for Morgan, who homered to left center to cut the deficit to 6-5. The Hurricane wouldn't score again.
Memphis opened the top of the fifth with two doubles to go up 7-5. Another single brought in the eighth run, reestablishing the three-run lead the Tigers had enjoyed an inning earlier.
In its last at-bats in the seventh, Nash singled down the line in left to keep the hope alive with one out. Celeste Wood smashed a ball between left and center that looked as if it was heading for the gap before a stunning diving catch robbed the Tulsa third baseman of sure extra bases. It was the second web gem of the game for the Tiger left fielder, and this one took away Tulsa's last chance as a foul out shortly ended the contest.
