TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa softball team is back on the road this weekend as the Golden Hurricane takes on Houston at Cougar Softball Stadium in conference play.
Â
First pitch for the series is set for 6 p.m. on Friday evening. Saturday will have a start time of 2 p.m., and Sunday will begin at noon. All games will air on ESPN+ this weekend. Matt Pedersen will bring fans the action from Houston.
Â
The Golden Hurricane enters the weekend with a 17-23 record and is 3-6 in The American. Houston is 19-21, but holds a 6-3 record in conference play, sweeping Memphis and winning two of three against ECU before taking a game off No. 23 Wichita State.
Â
Tulsa enjoys a 29-24-1 record against the hosts but is 5-12 all-time in Houston. This will be the first series played in Houston since 2018, when Tulsa took one of three against the Cougars. Two conference tournament matchups bookend 11-straight games at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
Â
The two teams met four times in 2022 with Houston winning the series 2-1-1. The programs had a rare split of three games in the regular season. Tulsa won the first matchup 9-1. Houston was victorious in a game-two thriller 13-11 and then the third game ended in a 2-2 tie after the game ran past the drop-dead time on Sunday.
Â
Last week, the Hurricane faced a tough schedule with a rematch against No. 3 Oklahoma State in the midweek before hosting UCF over the weekend. Tulsa hung with the highly ranked Cowgirls, trailing 2-1 entering the fifth inning. However, OSU scored six runs to take command in a 9-1 six inning loss. TU put together a great seventh inning comeback to take a 5-4 win off UCF over the weekend but dropped the other two games 8-1 and 13-1 in five frames.
Â
The Hurricane is hitting. 280 this season with 32 doubles, 15 triples, 18 home runs and 146 RBI. Haley Morgan leads the team and is third in the conference with a .407 batting average. The center fielder also has driven in 23 and is the team's leader in runs scored, crossing home 35 times herself.
Â
Sophomore Kailyn Bearpaw holds the team lead with 28 RBI this season, which includes a pair of home runs and four doubles. Senior catcher Rylee Keith also has some pop in her bat, smashing five doubles and four home runs this campaign.
Â
Maura Moore leads the team with a 3.17 ERA in the circle and a 10-10 record. The sophomore transfer holds opponents to a .242 batting average and has struck out 83 in 126 innings of work. She has 10 complete games in 22 starts with four shutouts to her name.
