The Tulsa women's basketball team added senior-transfer Caranda Perea and junior-transfer Amira Brown to the 2023-24 roster, as announced today by Head Coach Angie Nelp.
"When bringing players into our Golden Hurricane program, we always look for great character, a versatile skillset and competitive excellence," Nelp said. "Caranda and Amira bring all of that to the table, and we couldn't be more thrilled for them to join our family. Caranda brings size and versatility and plays with great passion. She knows what it takes to excel at a high level of basketball. Amira is a big guard that is a proven scorer and rebounder with a relentless work ethic. We can't wait to get started with our team this summer and continue to move our program forward."
Perea, a 6-2 forward, transferred to TU after two seasons (2021-23) at Temple and one year at George Washington (2020-21). As an Owl, Perea started in 22 of 57 games, and totaled 230 points, 150 rebounds, 42 assists, 36 blocks and 16 steals. Last season she averaged 5.0 points and 4.0 rebounds, including 6.4 ppg and 5.3 rpg in American Athletic Conference play, and had a team-leading 46.6 field goal percentage. Perea had a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds at Houston, while posting a career-best 17 points against Wichita State. At GW, Perea played in 18 games, averaged 4.2 points and 2.3 rebounds, and recorded 15 assists, 12 blocks and six steals. Perea attended Altoona (Pa.) Area High School where she tallied more than 1,000 career points, was named to the first-team all-district and all-region teams as both a junior and senior. She played club basketball for Central PA Dynamite and won the 2016 AAU Division I National Championship.
A 5-10 guard from Richmond, Calif., Brown transferred to TU after playing the 2022-23 season at Laney College in Oakland, Calif. As an Eagle, Brown started in all 27 games, scoring 564 points (20.9 ppg) and pulling down 269 rebounds (10.0 rpg), while shooting 47.8 percent from the field, 37.2 percent from three-point range and 67.1 percent from the free throw line. She also added 89 assists, 64 steals and 19 blocks last season. Brown was named as the Bay Valley Conference MVP and earned first-team all-state honors. Brown played at Salesian College Preparatory High School and was a four-year letterwinner but sat out her high school senior season and college freshman campaign due to injury
