BOCA RATON, Fla. – Goals from Bowen McCloud and Mike Eijgendaal lifted Tulsa to a 2-0 win over Florida Atlantic in the conference opener at FAU Soccer Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Golden Hurricane improves to 3-2-1, 1-0 in The American, while FAU falls to 1-2-3 and 0-1 in league play.
"I thought we were really patient in our attack," Tulsa head coach Tom McIntosh said "We did a good job in moving the ball and trying to shift them (FAU) around. Once we got the first goal, we knew the game would probably open up a bit, and I think we created four or five other good chances. It was great to see Mike Eijgendaal get the second goal. I was really happy for him. We had good performances from guys today off the bench, which is what we needed. It was a great team win on a super hot and muggy night."
Tulsa will return to the Hurricane Soccer Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 19 when the Golden Hurricane host Creighton at 7:00 p.m.
How it Happened
Tulsa applied pressure to the Owls from the opening kick, recording eight shots and drawing four corners in the opening half. The pressure paid off a few minutes before the break.
In the 43rd minute, Will Edwards received a pass from Sergio Baena, took a touch toward the end line just outside the right of the box and delivered a hard low cross across the goal mouth. McCloud got position, opened his body and placed the ball in the lower left corner for his first collegiate goal.
The second half was more of the same as Tulsa did not give the Owls much room to breathe. Tulsa had multiple opportunities to add to the lead, including a dangerous free kick in the 63rd minute. Baena took a free kick just outside the box and sent a ball curling for the corner that was palmed away by a diving goalkeeper. The Hurricane couldn't put the rebound away.
The insurance goal finally came at the 14:02 mark. Malik Henry-Scott beat his defender to the end line and laid it back for Eijgendaal, who took a touch, settled himself and calmly placed the ball in the left corner of the goal.
