Tulsa Drops 2-1 Decision to UNLV in Weather-Shortened Match

TULSA, Okla. – Inclement weather cut short an exciting game between the Tulsa men's soccer team and UNLV as the Rebels escaped with a 2-1 win after the game was called with 19:09 left to play.
Tulsa falls to 3-3-2 on the season, while UNLV improves to 2-4-2 in its 2023 campaign.
The Golden Hurricane will return to action next Friday at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium when Tulsa welcomes UAB for an American Athletic Conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
How it Happened
UNLV opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. Jonah Craig unleashed a shot from 10 yards outside the box that smashed off the crossbar and went high in the air. Nico Lopez was able to get past a defender, take his first touch with his thigh and then fired a left-footed shot from just over six yards out into the roof of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
The Rebels' lead didn't last long, as a handball in the 37th minute gave Tulsa a penalty. Sergio Baena stepped up and fired to the right of the goalkeeper to even the game at one. The game would remain tied heading into the break.
Just under four minutes elapsed in the second half when UNLV regained the lead. Tyler Ware intercepted a pass from Tulsa's Alex Lopez on the right side of the box, set himself up with a touch and scored with his left to go up 2-1.
Tulsa would continue to put UNLV under pressure but was unable to find the equalizer. As the clock entered the 71st minute, weather forced the pausing of the game. Eventually, the game would be called due to the same storm.
