TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa women's basketball team launched the 2023-24 campaign with their first official practice on Tuesday igniting excitement at the prestigious Donald W. Reynolds Center.

The Hurricane is gearing up for an exciting year after overcoming challenges in the previous season. Head Coach Angie Nelp enters her third year at the helm after leading the Hurricane to back-to-back 17-win seasons despite injury setbacks during the 2022-23 season.

"We are so excited to start official practice. We've made great strides in our development so far and we look forward to continuing to come together and grow as a team," said Nelp.

Key returners for the upcoming season include juniors Temira Poindexter and Delanie Crawford, who were the team's top scorers last year. Poindexter, hailing from nearby Sapulpa, Okla., led the team with 16.1 points per game and 5.4 rebounds while earning first-team American Athletic Conference honors. Crawford, from Piedmont, contributed with an 11.1 scoring average and a team-high 90 assists.

While injuries impacted Tulsa's performance last year, the return of players like Jessika Evans, Katelyn Levings, and Ahrray Young adds depth and experience to the roster. Despite missing 10 games a year ago, Young earned a spot on The American's all-freshman team with her impressive stats.

With one of the youngest rosters in the nation last year, Tulsa brought resilience as younger players stepped up to the challenge, gaining valuable experience. Despite losing seasoned veterans via graduation, returning players like Caroline Lyles, Hadley Periman, Cam Mathews, and Katia Gallegos will be well-prepared for more predominant roles in the upcoming season. Alyssa Parmer, who has battled injuries, and Lexi Foutch also return to the Tulsa lineup this year.

With nearly 70% of last year's minutes and scoring returning, along with the addition of new talents like Caranda Perea, Amira Brown, Mady Cartwright, Elise Hill, and Queen Ikhiuwu, the Tulsa women's basketball team is poised for a promising 2023-24 season. Coach Nelp and her staff have created a well-rounded and competitive roster ready to take on the challenges ahead.

Tulsa will open the season in St. Charles, Missouri, against Lindenwood on Monday, Nov. 6, with a 6:00 p.m. tipoff time.
