TULSA, Okla. –– Temira Poindexter's career-high 31 points led Tulsa to a 93-70 American Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon over the Wichita State Shockers at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Poindexter's performance wasn't the only career-breaking outing for the Hurricane. Ahrray Young had her first career double-double with 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Amira Brown had her first career double-figuring scoring game with a career-best 19 points on 7-of-7 from the field, 2-of-2 from three-point range and 23-of-6 from the free throw line.
"What a fun game and what an amazing job our team did today. I think one of the things we're most proud of is the display of teamwork that we had today and the way that we shared the ball and had balanced scoring. It was so impressive, and I'm so excited for our team to be able to display some of those things that they've been working really hard on in practice. We had four players in double figures, which was amazing," said Tulsa Head Coach Angie Nelp.
The stat-line for Poindexter, a Sapulpa, Okla. native, read 11-of-18 from the field, 6-of 12 from three-point range, 3-of-5 from the free throw line, eight rebounds, one assist, one block and just one turnover.
Crawford added 19 points, five rebounds and a team-high seven rebounds.
Tulsa (14-5, 4-2 AAC) led from start to finish and by as many as 27 points at various parts of the game. Wichita State (6-13, 2-5 AAC) also had four double-digit scorers while Daniela Abies led the way for the Shockers with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Hurricane sprinted out to a double-digit lead in the first 6:12 of the game and for a good portion of the first quarter and the remainder of the game led by double-figures as Tulsa doubled the Shockers in the first 10 minutes with a 30-15 lead after one period.
Tulsa's 30 first quarter points was a season high for a period as the Hurricane shot 55-percent from the field and 50-percent from three-point range.
After Tulsa took a 12-point lead on Crawford's three-pointer at the 0:32 mark of the second quarter the Hurricane kept its double-digit lead the remainder of the contest.
Tulsa built its first 27-point lead in the second quarter and finished the first half with a 23- point advantage and a halftime score of 56-33. The Hurricane shot 55-percent from the field, 56-percent from three-point range and 73-percent from the charity stripe.
Poindexter led all first-half scorers with 18 points followed by Crawford and Young with 15 each.
After a slow start after halftime, the Hurricane ended the third quarter on a 10-2 run over the final 3:35 to take a 75-50 lead heading into the final period. Tulsa's lead in the final quarter didn't drop under 21 points and was as high as 27 three times.
"Another area we're proud of is holding Wichita State on the offensive rebounds. We knew coming into the game that we would have to hold them on the boards, and in the first half, the way that we held them on the boards was just impressive. A lot of that was from some of our interior players, but our guards rebounded really well. So, we were able to play fast and fun and free like we like to, and we were able to convert and have a good field goal percentage and hold them on the boards," Nelp added.
Tulsa held a 46-31 edge in rebounding, including a 10-8 advantage on the offensive boards. The Hurricane dished out 20 assists for its 31 field goals made and had a season-high 14 three-pointers on 46.7 percent shooting from behind the arc.
