Tulsa Women Claim 65-55 Road Win at Charlotte

Nelp gets 50th career win as Hurricane head coach
CHARLOTTE, N.C. –– Delanie Crawford's 21 points led four Tulsa players in double-digits as the Golden Hurricane grabbed a 65-55 road win over the Charlotte 49ers Saturday afternoon at Halton Arena.
Tulsa improved to 16-5 and 6-2 in American Athletic Conference play, while Charlotte fell to 12-8 and 5-3. The victory gave Tulsa a 3-1 road record in league play and was the 50th win for Angie Nelp as the Golden Hurricane head coach, giving her a 50-29 mark.
Mady Cartwright, Caranda Perea and Temira Poindexter each added 10 points for the Hurricane. Tulsa had a strong performance on the boards as all 10 players grabbed at least two rebounds. Hadley Periman led the way with seven as the team had a 44-42 rebounding advantage over the 49ers.
Charlotte was led by Dazia Lawrence's 14 points and a double-double by Keanna Rembert with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Tulsa opened the game on a 10-2 run and took a 20-11 lead after one period. Charlotte outscored the Hurricane in the second quarter 18-11, but Tulsa still kept the lead heading into halftime with a two-point lead at 31-29.
Charlotte scored the first four points of the second half for a 33-31 lead, its first since a 2-0 lead at the start of the game. However, the 49er lead did not last long as Perea knocked down a three-pointer from the corner to put Tulsa back ahead 34-33. From that point, Tulsa went on a 9-3 run for a seven-point lead at 43-36 with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter.
Tulsa entered the fourth period with a 45-39 lead. Jessika Evans knocked down a three-pointer to give Tulsa an eight-point lead at 52-44 with 6:12 to play and Crawford followed with a fastbreak layup to put the Hurricane ahead by 10. Charlotte cut its deficit down to eight points before Perea hit a big trey at the 3:42 mark to make it an 11-point game, 57-46.
The Hurricane made eight of their 12 free throws in the final three minutes to preserve the double-figure lead and victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST QUARTER . . .
Tulsa went on a 10-0 run to make the score 10-2 on an Amira Brown layup after the 49ers scored the games' first basket
After a Charlotte timeout, Mady Cartwright scored her eighth point on a 3-pointer to make the score 13-2 at the 5:31 mark.
Tulsa took its largest lead of 14 points at 20-6 with 1:06 remaining, but the 49ers scored the final five points.
The period ended with the Hurricane holding a 20-11 lead.
Tulsa shot just 36% from the field on 8-of-22 while CLT was only 4-of-18 for 22% … Tulsa had a 19-9 edge on the boards in the first period.
IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . .
Charlotte began the quarter on a 5-0 run to make the score 20-16 as Tulsa was scoreless for the first 3:21 of the period.
Delanie Crawford's three-pointer ended Tulsa's drought to put the Hurricane ahead 23-16.
Crawford scored 10 straight points, the final three of the first quarter and the first seven of the second period.
The 49ers tied the score on a layup by Dasia Lawrence with 0:45 on the clock.
Caranda Perea's jumper from the corner at the 0:33 mark put Tulsa ahead 31-29 at the half.
Tulsa had 10 turnovers, while CLT had 10 points off those turnovers … the 49ers had 14 points in the paint to Tulsa's six in the quarter.
IN THE THIRD QUARTER . . .
CLT scored the first four points to take a its first lead, 33-31, since a 2-0 lead at the start of the game.
The 49ers lead only lasted 10-seconds as Perea knocked down a three-pointer from the corner to put Tulsa back ahead 34-33.
Tulsa led at the end of the period 45-39 as a late Charlotte field goal was taken away due to a shot chart violation.
IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . .
Charlotte scored the first three points of the quarter before the Hurricane went on a 9-2 run to take a 54-44 lead at the 5:34 mark.
Perea's three-pointer from the top of the key put Tulsa ahead 57-46 with 3:42 left on the game clock.
Tulsa made 8-of-10 free throws in the final 3:03 to hold on for the 65-55 victory.

• Tulsa improved to 16-5 on the season and 6-2 in the American Athletic Conference.
