The Hurricane (2-7-1, 1-2-0 The American) drew a last-minute penalty against Florida Atlantic on Friday. Senior Camilo Vargas stepped up and slotted it into the right side of the net to give TU a 2-1 lead, snapping a four-game losing streak and the winless skid at six.
Vargas leads the Hurricane with three goals this season after his match-winner against the Owls. Earlier in the second half, Gijs Hovius scored his first Tulsa goal to give TU a 1-0 lead. He has missed much of the season with injury. For Tulsa, it was the first time this season the Hurricane has scored first.
Alex Lopez picked up his first win in goal this season. The senior allowed one goal while making five saves, all in the opening half. He is up to 25 saves this season and 147 for his career, which is two behind Rob Beres (1996-98) for fifth in Tulsa history.
Central Arkansas (5-4, 2-1 ASUN) is coming off a 2-1 victory of its own, taking care of Lipscomb at home Saturday. The Bears have allowed just a pair of goals in their past three games, all in conference, and will look to continue the impressive defensive performances with Tuesday's game.
Elijah Bishop and Pietro Fontana scored the important goals for the Bears on Saturday. It was Fontana's team-leading third of the season, while Bishop got on the scoresheet for the first time, almost identical to Tulsa. Devonte Richards has played a part almost half of UCA's 13 goals, scoring once and assisting on five goals.
Javier Ramirez has played a key role in Central Arkansas' defensive performances of late and success throughout the season. The goalkeeper has played every minute and made 48 saves and allowed just 10 goals, an 82.8 saves percentage and 1.11 goals against average. He's recorded four shutouts and has allowed multiple goals in only three appearances this season.
UAB (4-3-3, 1-2-0 The American), Tulsa's opponent on Saturday, is on a two-game slide with losses at Memphis and FIU. The Blazers prepare to welcome Tulsa in a conference game that could be important for two teams competing to make the conference tournament at the end of the season.
The Blazers have a net zero goal differential, scoring 13 and allowing 13 this season. Jonathan Munteanu has been the last line of defense in UAB's 10 matches, making 38 saves for the Blazers and retaining a 1.30 goals against average and 74.5 save percentage. He's also recorded a pair of shutouts while logging every minute in goal.
Lucas Rizzo and Tony Kim have scored three goals apiece to lead the UAB attack. Rizzo added an assist to have a team-leading seven points. Gustavo Barbosa has been one of the primary playmakers with four assists this campaign.
Despite the relatively close distance between the two, Tuesday will be just the second meeting between Tulsa and Central Arkansas. The only other time the two have met is 1999, when Tulsa dispatched the Bears 5-0.
Tulsa and UAB first met in 1999 as well, Tulsa opened the season with a 4-3 victory at the UAB Tournament, but these two are no strangers. The Hurricane holds a 12-3-2 record against the Blazers all-time. Tulsa won last season's matchup 1-0 and has gone 2-0-1 in the last three games. UAB's last win in the series was a 2-1 game at Tulsa in 2013. The Blazers have never beaten the Hurricane in their own stadium.
