LONDON, United Kingdom – After playing at the professional level for over 12 years, The University of Tulsa men's tennis alumnus Marcelo Arévalo has finally reached Doubles No. 1 in the world, announced in the Nov. 11 rankings poll by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). His previous career highs were No. 3 in the poll a week prior, No. 4 in seven polls this year and No. 5 multiple times in 2023.
Arévalo broke into the world's top 10 list at No. 7 after winning the 2024 French Open Doubles title in June with Croatian partner Mate Pavic. Since joining together in January of this year, the pair have won four ATP titles together thus far, including the Hong Kong Open (January), Geneva Open (May), French Open (June) and Cincinnati Open (August).
After his time at TU, Arévalo has worked hard to achieve many years of success at the professional level. With his new No. 1 doubles ranking and his career-high singles ranking of 139, he is the highest-ranked player, male or female, across both disciplines in Salvadoran tennis history. He also became the first player from Central America to claim a major men's doubles title when he won the 2022 French Open with Jean-Julian Rojer.
At Tulsa, Arévalo was a two-year letterwinner and all-conference player. He was named C-USA Player of the Year and ITA Central Region Player to Watch as a sophomore. Arevalo compiled a career 29-14 singles mark, and 30-11 doubles record during his tenure at TU (2009-11).
