Tytiana Johnson Brings Home First Team All-Conference Honors
IRVING, Texas – Senior standout Marta Pecalli was named the American Athletic Conference Libero of the Year for the 2024 volleyball season and was also unanimously selected to the All-Conference First Team. Her teammate, Tytiana Johnson, was also named to First Team All-Conference.
From Trieste, Italy, Pecalli served as the defensive statistical leader of the American with 4.83 digs per set and maintained a national ranking of 31. Achievements throughout the year came to no surprise for Pecalli as she was named to three all-tournament teams in nonconference action, including the Baylor Classic, ORU Volleyball Classic and the Tulsa Invitational
She earned her first of two Defensive Player of the Week awards this season following her impressive weekend at ORU's tournament, where she notched six digs per set. She earned all-tournament team honors at the Tulsa Volleyball Invitational after putting up 4.21 digs and 1.36 assists in three matches with wins over Stephen F. Austin and No. 22 Arkansas.
Her second Defensive Player of the Week award came on Oct. 28 following matches with UAB and Memphis where she recorded 19 and 16 digs, respectively, in three-set sweeps over both teams.
Pecalli recorded her 2,000th career dig while hosting UAB for Homecoming where she posted 19 digs in three sets.
"I am so happy for Marta for receiving First Team all-conference and Libero of the Year." Coach Ramatowski commented, "Marta has continued all season to be a defense presence in the back row for our team. Her work ethic, her discipline and her high volleyball IQ has been the reason for her success."
Johnson, a middle blocker from Dallas, Texas, was a force at the net and a difficult hurdle for opposing teams throughout the year. She posted an American Athletic Conference-leading 1.36 blocks per set and finished the regular season at No. 24 in the nation for the category. She recorded 124 blocks for first in the conference and 47th in the country. Johnson was also a powerful middle for the Golden Hurricane with 1.76 kills per set and a season attack percentage of .306.
Johnson earned recognition throughout the year as she was named to the Baylor All-Classic team and the American Conference Weekly Honorable Mention list for recording 20 kills, a .515 attack percentage and 14 blocks in matches with Campbell, Baylor, and Abilene Christian. Johnson hit .625, knocking down 11 kills and two block assists at UAB on September 27th, and added five kills, five blocks, and a .364 hitting mark against Temple on September 29th to earn her second Weekly Honorable Mention nod from the American Athletic Conference.
Coach Ramatowski shared, "I am so happy for Tytiana for also earning first team all-conference. Tytiana has shown her dominance at the net this season, leading the conference in blocks per set. The combination of her athletic ability and her improved eye sequence on defense has led her to that success."
