11/23/2024 3:45:00 PM | Women's Basketball
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Tulsa women's basketball team fought hard against an equally resilient Marshall squad on Saturday but fell short in overtime, 84-80, to conclude the State Farm WBCA Showcase in the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World. The Golden Hurricane moves to 1-4 on the year.
Pacing the Hurricane's scoring efforts was senior Delanie Crawford, who put up a season-high 26 points. Sophomores Mady Cartwright (14 points) and Elise Hill (13 points) and redshirt junior Paige Bradley (11 points) all contributed double-figures in points on the day with Bradley leading all TU players with 10 boards for her first career double-double.
Tulsa had its strongest start to a game this season when the Hurricane scored 26 points in the first quarter and 45 points in the first half, both season-highs for the team so far.
The Hurricane grabbed the lead early in the first quarter and held the advantage for 28:04 total minutes until the Thundering Herd fought back to take their first substantial lead (60-58) at 6:34 in the fourth quarter. They forced overtime with a jump shot by Ashley Tudor with 11 seconds left in regulation and proceeded to outpace Tulsa in overtime, 15-11, to win 84-80.
Marshall had three reach double-digit points, including Aislynn Hayes (31), Madison Kellione (20) and Meredith Maier (13). Hayes also led the Herd with nine boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST QUARTER . . .
Delanie Crawford was the first player on the court to score when she swished a three-pointer 11 seconds into the game. She added a mid-range jumper and Elise Hill made a trey from the left side while Marshall made three straight threes to open the game.
Hill gave Tulsa the lead again at 11-9 right before the Herd took it right back at 12-11 with their fourth made three at 5:50 to be followed only by another Delanie Crawford three at 5:40 to give TU the 13-12 advantage at the media break.
Tulsa continued to score off another three by Hill and two-point field goals by Crawford, Kristol Ayson and Mady Cartwright, with Cartwright adding a pair of free throws.
TU outrebounded Marshall 10-6 and benefitted from seven fast break points. The Hurricane shot for 59% in the quarter (10-17) and 40% in three-pointers (4-10).
Delanie Crawford had 11 points with Elise Hill right behind at 9 points.
IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . .
Mady Cartwright opened the scoring for TU in the second period when she took the ball down the court on a fast break for the mid-range jumper. After Marshall made its sixth three-pointer, the Hurricane responded with back-to-back treys to take a 34-22 lead at 7:41.
From there, Marshall utilized an 8-0 scoring run to trim the deficit to four at 34-30, keeping Tulsa scoreless for a three-minute stretch until Paige Bradley pulled up for a jump shot just outside the paint.
Tulsa's final five points scored in the first half were from the free throw line while Marshall added three more treys and a pair of free throws. The Hurricane led 45-43 at the half.
Through two quarters, Tulsa shot 61.5% from the field, including 40% from three-point land (6-15), and 87.5% from the free throw line (8-7). Marshall was 39.4% in field goals (13-33), 55.6% in threes (10-18) and a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe.
Delanie Crawford was leading with 14 points, with Mady Cartwright (10 points) and Elise Hill (nine points) rounding out the top three scorers.
IN THE THIRD QUARTER . . .
Marshall scored its 11th three-pointer of the game to open the second half, taking a 46-45 lead early in the third quarter. Tulsa's first points of the half came from none other than Delanie Crawford, who drained a mid-range jumper at 7:59 and followed on the next possession with her third three-pointer of the game.
Mady Cartwright moved to 6-6 in free throws and Hadley Periman got herself on the board on a layup, helping Tulsa go up 54-50 at the media timeout.
Neither team scored in the next two minutes until Jade Clack ran in a fast break layup at 2:52. From there, both teams traded points until the third period ended with Tulsa in the lead 56-54.
IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . .
Two Marshall layups and two more Mady Cartwright free throws made it a tie ballgame at 58-58 at 8:56 in the fourth frame.
The Herd took their first lead since the 6:42 mark in the first quarter (9-8) when Ashley Tudor put up a contested layup to make it a 60-58 game. Tulsa had been held scoreless for 4:06 resulting from three turnovers in that span. Elise Hill snapped the drought with a pull-up jump shot to tie the game back up again at 60-60 entering the media break.
Delanie Crawford converted an and-1, Jade Clack sank a jumper and Elise Hill added two free throws while Marshall's Madison Kellione made a pair of layups to make it a 67-64 game in favor of the Hurricane at 2:12.
Marshall made a free throw at 1:48 to trim Tulsa's lead to 67-65. After a 30-second timeout by Tulsa, Delanie Crawford drew a huge foul and made a pair of clutch free throws to give TU a 69-65 lead with 35 seconds left.
The Herd got themselves to the line with 18.6 seconds left and made a pair of free throws to trim the deficit to two at 69-67.
Another timeout later, the Hurricane inbounded the ball to Delanie Crawford who drew a foul but couldn't capitalize on the following free throw attempts.
After Marshall's final timeout, the Herd's Ashley Tudor took the ball to the basket and tied the game at 69-69 with 11 seconds to go. Tulsa called one last timeout, and Jade Clack attempted a three-pointer to win the game, but the ball bounced off the rim and sent the game into overtime.
IN OVERTIME . . .
Marshall began the overtime period with a three-pointer by Madison Kellione. Paige Bradley sank a pair of free throws and added a jumper from within the arc, and the Herd contributed three free throws to make it a 75-73 game at 2:05 with Marshall ahead.
Delanie Crawford's heroics came through once again when she drew a foul at 1:54 and made both free throws to knot it up at 75-75.
Marshall's Kellione could not be stopped as she responded with a corner three from the right side to give the Herd a 78-75 advantage with 1:27 on the clock. TU couldn't retaliate on the following possession and was forced to foul and play catch-up from there. Marshall then added a free throw and prevented Tulsa from scoring on its next possession, leading 79-75 with 23.3 seconds remaining. Two more free throws by the Herd would effectively ice the game. Both teams traded free throws until the final score read 84-80 Marshall when the clock expired.
