Wichita Takes Four Set Match from Tulsa

Wichita, Kan. — Tulsa traveled to Wichita State for the second meeting of the weekend with the Shockers on Sunday. Wichita State was able to take the first match on Friday and continues the win streak with another win over Tulsa on Sunday with the 1-3 (19-25, 23-25, 25-23, 21-25) score. Tulsa falls to 15-9 in the conference with a 7-5 overall record and Wichita improves to 9-3 in the AAC with an overall record of 14-10.
 
The Golden Hurricane struggled to find a way through the Wichita State attacking game as the Shockers posted a team total of 61 kills. Tulsa improved in attack percentage in comparison to the last meeting with the Shockers as they hit over .150 in all sets except set one (.045). Tulsa did continue the dominant defensive streak with an average of 16 digs per set and found a team total of 12 blocks. Wichita was able to boast 19.25 digs per set and 12.5 team blocks to outshine the Tulsa stat line.
 
The Hurricane looked to Tytiana Johnson who was able to hit for her third 10+ kill game in the season with 13 kills. Johnson was also able to boast a .458 attack percentage on her 24 attempts. Tatum Tornatta joined in with another 12 kills and added nine digs on the defensive side. To add to the team's 46 kills, Beth Bayless had 8 kills.
 
The defensively sound Golden Hurricane made it difficult for the attacking Shockers as Tytiana Johnson was once again the front runner with six block assists and one solo for the team's 12 blocks. Tatum Tornatta was able to add 4 block assists to the mix as well. From the back row, Marta Pecalli continued with her strong defensive work as she lifted 16 digs and recorded 3 assists aiding the offense. Lauren Eitler and Brayden Hipp each were able to add 11 digs to add to the team total of 64 digs.
 
Wichita had an impressive performance from Brooklyn Legget with 22 kills and a .341 attack percentage. Katie Galligan continued as the defensive leader for the Shockers as she found herself 27 of the 77 team digs.
 
Tulsa continues the road as they head to East Carolina on Friday, November 8th before traveling to Charlotte on Sunday, November 10th. All Tulsa Golden Hurricane Volleyball can be streamed on ESPN+. The first serve on November 8th is set for 5:00 P.M. CT.

How It Happened
 
SET 1 | With a strong start Wichita was able to jump out to an early lead with a 7-1 scoring run. Tulsa fought back after a kill from Tytiana Johnson, Brayden Hipp was able to serve a 4-point scoring run to bring the score to 12-14 prior to Wichita's timeout. Wichita State forced Tulsa to call their first timeout of the set after an 8-2 run. Wichita continued the run until 16-24 when Tulsa attempted to fight back only adding three points and fell short after Brooklyn Leggett closed the set out for Wichita 25-19.
 
SET 2 | Tulsa started off stronger in set two being able to keep pace with the Wichita offense. Set two had three different lead changes prior to the Media Timeout which came with Wichita leading 12-15. Tulsa continued the battle to take the lead at 18-17 to force a Wichita Timeout. The Shockers were able to add a 3-point run after their timeout to take the score to 18-20, Wichita. Tulsa continued a battle through the remainder of the set not allowing Wichita to score more than 2 points in a row but ultimately fell short 23-25.
 
SET 3 | Tulsa came out in set two with a kill from Rachel Brown until Wichita State was able to start their 7-1 run to make the score 2-8. Tulsa continued to battle until a string of four errors from Wichita allowed Tulsa a 4-point scoring run bringing the score to 8-10. Wichita extended the lead out to five points at 10-15. Tulsa fought for each point and forced a Wichita timeout at 15-17. Tulsa continued to fight for momentum until they finally tied the match at 19-19. Tulsa was able to string together a four-point run to make it 23-20. Tulsa was able to take set three 25-23.
 
SET 4 | Tulsa carried the momentum into set four where they jumped out to an early lead. Wichita was able to stay in the fight and take over the lead, but Tulsa continued to battle taking the lead at 12-11 to force a Wichita timeout. The remainder of set two was kept to a point differential of one. Tulsa called timeout at 17-18. Wichita came out to extend the lead to 19-17 with Tulsa still fighting in each rally. Tulsa ultimately fell short with Wichita State closing the match 25-21.
