Matching up with Missouri State
- Despite being 181 miles apart from each other, The University of Tulsa and Missouri State have met just 15 times in a series that dates to the 1980-81 season.
- The series has been revived as the two teams last played in the 2015 WNIT first round, where the Hurricane took down the Bears 78-72 in Springfield.
- The overall series leans in favor of the Bears, 8-7 ... TU is just 2-7 when facing MSU in Springfield.
- Sunday is the season-opener for Missouri State.
- Third-year head coach Beth Cunningham returns three battle-tested starters from last season, including Lacy Stokes, Kyrah Daniels and Paige Rocca, all guards
- Like Tulsa, Missouri State competed in the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament in 2023-24, where the Bears fell to eventual champion Illinois in the first round, 74-69.
- MSU finished third in Missouri Valley Conference standings at 15-5 (23-10 overall) and concluded the MVC Championship as conference runners-up after #1 Drake landed a buzzer-beater layup to take the title in a 76-75 result.
Heroic Hill Caps TU's Massive Comeback in Season-Opener
- Returning guard Elise Hill started her sophomore season with a bang after she sank a three-pointer in the final second of the Golden Hurricane's 2024-25 season-opener, capping a 17-point comeback for the 63-60 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Wednesday night in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
- With five seconds left, Hill, a Tulsa native, fielded an inbounded pass from sophomore teammate Mady Cartwright, took the ball to the top of the key, and swished it in front of 1,355 roaring fans. The hometown hero would finish with 12 points off 5-for-9 shooting.
- 17 points is the largest deficit Tulsa has ever overcome.
Late Free Throws Lifts Tulsa over Arkansas-Pine Bluff
- The Hurricane went 10-14 in free throws in the fourth quarter to outscore the Lions 15-5 in the final period to complete a 17-point comeback victory.
- Tulsa was down 55-48 entering the fourth quarter and had trailed by as many as 17 points at the half.
- Neither team could score in the first 4:27 of the fourth quarter until Mady Cartwright drew a shooting foul and made the subsequent free throws.
- Delanie Crawford (3), Jade Clack (2) and Lexie Foutch (1) each contributed free throws before Cartwright drew a foul while going for an offensive board and made the pair of free throws that tied the game at 60-60 at 0:17.
- From there, Cartwright drew a charge with five seconds left, passed the ball to Elise Hill and watched as Hill made the game-winner right before time expired.
Newcomers Make Immediate Impact for TU
- Transfers Kristol Ayson (Jacksonville State), Paige Bradley (TCU), Jade Clack (TCU) and McKayla Miller (Creighton) all saw their first playing time for the Golden Hurricane during the 63-60 comeback win over UAPB.
- The group combined for 23 points, led by Paige Bradley's 9 points off 3-8 three-pointers and Jade Clack's 8 points.
- The TCU additions Bradley and Clack each led the Hurricane with six rebounds.
Nelp Over Halfway to Century Mark in Wins.
- Tulsa's Angie Nelp won her 50th career game in her three seasons with a 65-55 win at Charlotte on Jan. 27, 2024.
- She finished her third year with a 59-34 career record in her three years at Tulsa.
- No previous Tulsa coach had reached 50 wins in their first three seasons … only three other Tulsa head coaches won more than 50 games in their careers.
Crawford Already Racking up Awards
- Preseason expectations for senior guard Delanie Crawford are high as the returning All-American from Piedmont, Okla., has been named to two preseason honors.
- The WBCA selected Crawford as one of 25 hoopers from around the country to the 2025 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Watch List, becoming the first Golden Hurricane player to represent Tulsa on any Hammon Award watch list.
- Crawford was also voted to the American Athletic Conference Preseason All-Conference First Team by the league's coaches.
Tulsa Returns an All-American in Delanie Crawford
- Delanie Crawford is back for her fourth and final season with the Golden Hurricane.
- The senior from Piedmont, Okla., is coming off a tremendous 2023-24 junior season where she started in all 35 games and averaged 19.0 points (665), 5.7 rebounds (201), 2.7 assists (95) and 1.1 steals (39) per contest. She finished 33 games with 10 or more points, 15 games over 20 points, and three games scoring over 30. On defense, she added five double-figure rebounding contests to earn five double-doubles.
- By the end of last year, Crawford had set the program record for most three-point buckets in a season with 99, third for total points (665) and field goals made (219) and fourth for points per game (19.0).
- Crawford's accolades began to pile up as she dominated the court week in and week out a year ago. She was named Tulsa's fourth all-time WBCA Coaches' All-American, for which she took home Honorable Mention status and was named a Region 3 finalist. In The American, she was named the league's Most Improved Player of the Year and Second Team All-Conference following six AAC weekly honor roll awards and one Player of the Week honor.
Nine Newcomers Highlight the Roster
- Tulsa's roster features nine newcomers to the program, including five transfers and four true freshmen.
- Portal additions include redshirt freshman Tobi Ademuwagun (pronounced ah-day-moo-wag-gun) from Penn, senior Kristol Ayson from Jacksonville State, redshirt junior Paige Bradley and sophomore Jade Clack from TCU and sophomore McKayla Miller from Creighton.
- The four freshmen looking for their first collegiate action are the twins from Houston, Brooklyn and Kennedi Alexander, Brynn Eshoo of Inverness, Ill. and Whitney Sullivan from Orangeville, Ill.
Hurricane Selected 4th in Coaches' Poll
- The AAC women's basketball coaches have chosen Tulsa to finish fourth in the league after taking a share of the regular season championship last season and the No. 1 seed in the conference championship.
- TU ties the program's highest selection in the AAC preseason poll ... Tulsa was previously voted 4th ahead of the 2022-23 season in Angie Nelp's second season at the helm.
