TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa women's basketball team started the American Athletic Conference season with a bang Sunday in the Donald W. Reynolds Center, taking down East Carolina (8-5, 0-1 AAC) in a high-scoring 93-84 thriller. Big games by senior Delanie Crawford and sophomore Elise Hill pushed the Golden Hurricane to 7-6 on the year and 1-0 in the young conference season.
Crawford would finish with 36 points on 14-20 shooting, the third-highest individual scoring game in program history and the second-most scored in a conference game. Hill picked up eight steals, the second-most ever by a Tulsa player.
Hill led a defensive effort that forced 34 turnovers by the Pirates, letting the Hurricane offense score 37 points off ECU's errors.
Each team had four players in double-figure scoring territory. Both squads finished above 50% shooting with TU going 35-62 (56.5%) from the field and ECU finishing 32-62 (51.6%). 67 combined field goals are the most ever recorded in the Reynolds Center.
Although both teams scored over 40 per half, Tulsa was the more effective shooting team, leading for 32 minutes and never trailing after the 6:16 mark in the second quarter.
Tulsa also owned the paint, scoring 50 points from close range compared to ECU's 38 points in the paint. Players like Hadley Periman (14 points), Paige Bradley (12 points) and Kristol Ayson (10 points) dominated under the basket
Bradley led TU with five assists, Crawford paced the Hurricane with seven boards and Periman boosted the defense with two blocks, surpassing her AAC-leading season average of 1.78.
"It was such a great team win," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "I'm so proud of our entire team and the effort that they had and the heart and the relentlessness that they showed on the floor. We know that we have a really competitive league, and we knew we had to show up and we had to be our best. Delanie Crawford had a career-high 36 points, you've got Elise Hill that comes in with eight steals. You've got Hadley Periman who comes in with 14 points, and then Kristol follows that up with 10, and then Paige who added 12. There's so many other contributions than just the scoring too. You've got team rebounding, you've got assists and you've got steals. And the way that our team worked together today, I was really proud of them.
"We knew we had to keep an up-tempo game. [ECU]'s a very good team. They're a very good defensive team that is holding a lot of teams in the 50's and some teams in the 40's, so I felt like our players did a great job preparing and executing you know that game plan to keep it a high possession game."
East Carolina was led by Jayla Hearp's 21 points. Khia Miller (13), Amiya Joyner (12) and Tatyana Wyche (10) joined her in double-figure scoring. Wyche finished with nine rebounds, one shy of earning a double-double.
