Delanie Crawford Passes 1,000 Points in Tulsa’s 74-65 Setback at Wichita State

2/17/2024 6:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball

WICHITA, Kan. — In one of the best performances in her career, Tulsa junior guard Delanie Crawford became the 13th Golden Hurricane to eclipse the career 1,000-point mark in Saturday's 74-65 loss at Wichita State. TU dropped to 18-8 and 8-5 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Shockers rose to 8-18 and 4-10.

In her 83rd career game for the Hurricane, Crawford needed just seven points to hit the mark, and she did so with a pull-up jump shot in the paint at 5:25 in the second quarter on the way to finishing the day with a team-leading 29 points off 12-of-20 shooting from the field, including 4-of-10 three-pointers to go with one free throw.

"It's exciting because it's well deserved," said Head Coach Angie Nelp. "She does so much for this team and carries a large load for us offensively this year. I'm excited about that for her and excited about that for our team when it comes to those individual awards. They're always special. Do we wish we were able to have that award on the same day as a win? Sure, but it doesn't minimize the milestone in any way. We didn't come away with the victory, but congratulations to her."

"There were a lot of different aspects to this game," said Nelp. "I felt like in the third quarter we gave up so many offensive rebounds, and overall, we knew that the keys to the game were partly rebounding and protecting that paint. We also turned it over quite a bit. Not our best day of basketball, but we're going to learn from this. We're going to grow you know, and we're going to continue on our journey as a team this year, and today was just one of those heartbreaking moments where growth doesn't always feel good. We're going to watch film, learn from it and fight harder. We've got to fight harder on the road."

Wichita State won the rebounding battle 43 to 37, led by Daniela Abies who posted 13 on the day to go with 19 points for a double-double. She, along with DJ McCarty (26) and Sierra Morrow (11), all reached double-figures in points. On the Tulsa side, Crawford's 29 points led the floor with Temira Poindexter following with 14 points and Katia Gallegos and Mady Cartwright scoring six apiece.

Tulsa struggled to get to the free throw line, making just 4-of-8 shots while the Shockers put away 20 free throws in 34 attempts. Four TU players were in foul trouble with three or more fouls with Crawford and Jessika Evans exiting late in the fourth quarter with five apiece.

Leading Tulsa in rebounds was Hadley Periman with eight, while Katia Gallegos led with three steals in her first full start since suffering an injury at the Maui Classic back in November. Crawford and Evans each connected on three assists, and Crawford recorded two rejections.

Saturday's game featured 15 tie scores and nine total lead changes before the Shockers took control at 60-59 at 5:49 in the fourth quarter and never trailed again on the way to sealing the game 74-65.

HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST QUARTER . . .
Six different Tulsa players scored in the game's first quarter, starting with a pull-up jump shot by Delanie Crawford, a three-pointer by Temira Poindexter, a second-chance layup by Amira Brown, a jumper by Mady Cartwright, a deep three from Elise Hill and a driving layup by Hadley Periman. Neither team led by more than five as Wichita State enjoyed a 9-0 scoring run that gave the Shockers the lead at 14-10.

Tulsa would fight back with an 8-4 run capped off by a three at the buzzer by Crawford to put the score at 18-18 heading into the second quarter.

IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . .
Knotted up at 23-23 at the 5:25 mark, Delanie Crawford scored her seventh point of the day, crossing the 1,000-point threshold to become the 13th Golden Hurricane to accomplish the feat. From there, she made four of Tulsa's next five field goals on the way to scoring 10 of the Hurricane's 16 points in the second quarter.

The lead was exchanged four times with five tie scores before the Shockers ended the first half on top 36-34.

IN THE THIRD QUARTER . . .
Though Wichita State won 15 rebounds, including nine on offense, Tulsa outscored the Shockers 19-14 to pull away with a three-point lead at 53-50 at the quarter break. Tulsa's bench did not score in the third period as Delanie Crawford sank nine points followed by Temira Poindexter with seven and Katia Gallegos with three. Wichita State had only two players score in the frame, including DJ McCarty, who dropped eight points, and Daniela Abies, who had six.

IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . .
Tulsa enjoyed its biggest lead of the game at 56-50 when Delanie Crawford sank her fourth and final three-pointer of the day at 9:42. The momentum was short-lived as Wichita State clawed back to tie it up at 59-59, 61-61 and again at 63-63 before taking control at 66-63 at 3:16 and never looked back, leading by as much as nine to close out the game 74-65.

The Shockers made 12-of-16 free throws in the quarter to keep the Hurricane's comeback at bay. Wichita State has now won two of their last three games.
