Golden Hurricane Softball Sweeps Day Two of Rebel Classic

2/24/2024 11:20:00 PM | Softball

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Tulsa softball team avenged an earlier loss to Southern Utah with a 15-5 win in five innings, and then knocked off Santa Clara 8-1 to win both games of the UNLV Rebel Classic on Saturday in Eller Media Stadium.

The Hurricane (8-5, 0-0 AAC) combined for 23 runs and 30 hits over the two-game stretch. Southern Utah (7-7, 0-0 WAC) fell in both of its contests on Saturday. Santa Clara (6-7, 0-0 WCC) had one more game to go on Saturday night.

Tulsa's 15 runs and 17 hits against the T-Birds were both highs in Coach Crissy Strimple's tenure as head coach. Imani Edwards, Kailyn Bearpaw and Abby Jones all had hits in the opener. MacKenzie Denson, Haley Morgan and Kennedy Cramer added two apiece. One of Cramer's hits was a two-run home run as the Hurricane began to pull away.

Cramer and Jones led Tulsa with five hits in the two games, while Denson, Morgan and Edwards had four. Edwards had a team-leading four RBI. As a team, the Hurricane had eight doubles, three triples and a home run on Saturday while hitting .484.

Three pitchers combined to get the win in the opener. Kylee Nash (2-2) tossed two innings and allowed a run on two hits while striking out one. Anneca Anderson was the first reliever, tossing 1.2 innings and allowing four runs on four hits. Alexa Hopkins closed the game with an inning and a third of action. She allowed just one hit and struck out a batter.

Maura Moore (4-2) went the distance in game two. She spun seven innings of one-run softball, allowing seven hits and walking two while striking out five batters. Tulsa's defense behind her was great, with zero errors in game two and only one on the day.

GAME 1 – TULSA 15, SOUTHERN UTAH 5
Just like Friday's game, Tulsa jumped out to an early lead, but this time, the Hurricane didn't take its foot of the gas.             MacKenzie Denson didn't wait long to bring excitement, tripling to open the game. Haley Morgan singled to bring in Denson for the morning's first run. Morgan then stole second and advanced to third on an error, which allowed Edwards to bring her home with a sacrifice to center.

The T-Birds threatened in the bottom of the frame, getting a leadoff double of their own. After a walk and a strikeout, a second walk loaded the bags. But Nash forced a groundout to Imani, who stepped on second and fired over to first to complete the double play and keep Southern Utah off the board.

Kailyn Bearpaw knocked a one-out double in the top of the second and advanced to third on a Kennedy Cramer bunt single. Cramer got herself in scoring position with a stolen base, which allowed catcher Jayla Park to bring both home with a single through the right side. Elle Rouse pinch ran and advanced to second on a single from Denson and scored on a single from Edwards to give Tulsa a 5-0 advantage. Skaggs brought both Denson and Edwards home with a base knock and Tulsa had a commanding 7-0 lead before the sixth out of the game.

A throwing error got the T-Birds on the board in the bottom of the second, ending a shot at a shutout, but TU immediately responded with a three-run third. Abby Jones singled and stole second, only to score on a Bearpaw double. Then, Cramer cleared the bags with a two-run blast to left as Tulsa jumped ahead 10-1.

Jones tripled in Celeste Wood in the fourth and scored on a Bearpaw hit to give Tulsa a 12-1 advantage and continue the streak of scoring every inning. Southern Utah's best inning was the bottom of the fourth. A leadoff double and then a single and walk with one out loaded the bases. SUU scored a run on a hit batter, and then a two-out double brought in two more to make it 12-4. A chopper to third was knocked down, but no play was able to be made as the fifth and final run of the day for Southern Utah scored.

But again, TU responded in the top of the fifth. Denson walked to lead things off and then Morgan and Edwards singled to bring her in. Consecutive groundouts from Skaggs and Wood each drove in a run as Tulsa led by what would be the final, 15-5. Alexa Hopkins shut the T-Birds down with a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth, in what happened to be the only clean half-inning of the game.

GAME 2 – TULSA 8, SANTA CLARA 1
The Hurricane scored first in the top of the second inning. Claira Skaggs drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double from Abby Jones, who herself advanced to third on a throwing error. Kailyn Bearpaw lined into a sacrifice fly in left, bringing in Jones. After Kennedy Cramer was hit by a pitch, she used her speed to score from first off the bat of a Maci Cole double, and Tulsa took a 3-0 lead into the third.

That would be all Maura Moore needed. The junior hurler allowed just one run and seven hits in the ballgame. The run came in the third inning after a leadoff single worked her way around to score. A passed ball and ground out had two down with the runner on third. The Broncos connected on another single to score its lone run of the game.

Tulsa got the run back and then some in the top of the next inning. Jones doubled again to lead off the frame. After a flyout, Cramer came through with a big RBI triple to renew the 3-run lead, 4-1. A Cole single drove in Cramer and Tulsa was up 5-1.

The fun would continue in the sixth as Cramer doubled with one away. Cole followed with a double of her own to drive in Cramer for her third RBI as Tulsa increased its lead to 6-1. Cole would score the seventh run on a throwing error from the center fielder following a Denson single. Haley Morgan singled Denson to third, and then an Imani Edwards single brought in the eighth and final run.
