MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior pitcher Kylee Nash was dominant in the circle and Tulsa's bats stayed hot as the Golden Hurricane beat Memphis 7-0 Sunday to complete the sweep in its conference opening series at the Tigers Softball Complex.
Tulsa improves to 15-7 and 3-0 in The American Athletic Conference with the win, while Memphis falls to 3-19 and 0-3 in conference play.
Each Tulsa pitcher tossed a complete game over the weekend, with Nash (4-2) spinning a seven inning two-hit shutout to join Maura Moore and Anneca Anderson. The Tigers hardly threatened, only getting a runner to third once. Nash threw 113 pitches and struck out seven batters, and she didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning.
Haley Morgan had a multi-hit day at the plate, picking up two hits and a pair of RBIs. Imani Edwards also drove in two with a triple in the third to open the scoring. MacKenzie Denson, Kennedy Cramer and Maci Cole each picked up RBI in the win. Abby Jones added a triple and Celeste Wood doubled as well.
TULSA 7, MEMPHIS 0
Both teams were held scoreless with one walk in the first two innings. Celeste Wood picked up the first hit of the game with a double, her eighth of the season, in the third inning. After consecutive strikeouts, Haley Morgan drew a walk to extend the inning. Imani Edwards stepped up and lifted a high fly ball that just got over the glove of the center fielder and off the wall. Wood and Morgan scored easily and Edwards was left at third with a stand-up triple as Tulsa went ahead 2-0.
The Hurricane widened the advantage with a four-run fourth. With one away, Kennedy Cramer singled, Kailyn Bearpaw walked and Wood was hit by a pitch, loading the bags. Maci Cole then drew a walk to bring in a run. MacKenzie Denson grounded into a fielder's choice as Cole was retired at second, but Denson beat the throw at first to give Morgan a chance at the plate with Tulsa now up 4-0.
Morgan took advantage of the opportunity, driving a 1-0 pitch to center, scoring both Wood from third and Denson from first. She then stole second but was left there as Tulsa took its 6-0 advantage into the bottom of the frame.
The Hurricane scored its final run in the top of the fifth. With one out, Abby Jones laced a triple to right. Kennedy Cramer put the next ball in play, grounding out to short, but it was more than enough for Jones to cross home for Tulsa's seventh run of the afternoon.
