Tulsa Rolls on to WBIT Quarterfinals with 73-61 Win Over Georgetown

Tulsa hosts Illinois Thursday at Reynolds Center
TULSA, Okla. –– Tulsa scored the final 12 points to pull away for a 73-61 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas in WBIT second round action Sunday afternoon in front of 1,464 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center
The Golden Hurricane kept its postseason alive with its 25th win of the year for a 25-9 record, while the Hoyas closed the season with a 23-12 mark.
Tulsa will host quarterfinal action of the WBIT this Thursday night against the Illinois Fighting Illini with tipoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Reynolds Center. Tickets are on sale now online at TulsaHurricane.com.

Delanie Crawford scored a game-high 21 points, including six in Tulsa's closing run, while also adding six assist, five rebounds and four steals. Temira Poindexter added 19 points and blocked three shots, while freshmen Elise Hill and Mady Cartwright combined for 20 points. Hill had her second straight double-digit scoring game with 11 points, all coming in the first half, while all of Cartwright's nine points came from behind the arc.
"I'm really proud of our team. So excited for them and with the win. Georgetown is a very good team. The way that we handled their physicality and the way that we handled the things they do defensively, it just shows the level of our team. We were able to close the game out on a 12-0 run and hold them scoreless for the last six and a half minutes. It's been the defensive side of the ball that is propelling us through this postseason," said Tulsa Head Coach Angie Nelp.
Georgetown had four double-figure scorers, led by Kelsey Ransom's 18 points, Alex Cowan with 13 and 10 from both Graceann Bennett and Mya Bembry.
With the scored tied 61-61 at the 6:41 mark of the final quarter, Tulsa would score the next 12 points. Crawford's layup with 6:24 remaining put Tulsa ahead by two, 63-61, beginning the final 12-0 run to close out the game.
"You can definitely see that this was a game of runs," said Nelp. "At times it was our pace and at times it was their pace. I felt like coming out we were really aggressive in transition. We were able to get rebounds, we were able to, even on made baskets, push the tempo. Georgetown changed their press a little bit further down the line in the game to try to contain our transition a little bit."
Tulsa took an 11-point lead in the first quarter when Elise Hill's three-pointer put Tulsa ahead 19-8 with 4:23 remaining on the clock. The Hurricane ended the opening quarter with a 27-20 lead.
In the second quarter, Georgetown got as close as one point at 38-37 with 2:20 left on the first-half clock, but the Hoyas were held scoreless from that point on. Crawford's three-pointer with 0:59 remaining pushed Tulsa's lead back to four points at intermission, 41-37. It was an even third quarter as the two teams each scored 18 points as Tulsa still held a four-point lead heading into the final frame.
Bennett's layup with 7:31 remaining in the contest tied the game for the first time for the Hoyas. Poindexter's 2-of-3 free throws put Tulsa back-up 61-59 before Georgetown's Bembry made a layup to make it 61-all with 6:41 remaining on the game clock. Crawford's layup 0:17 later began Tulsa's final 12-0 run to close-out the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST QUARTER . . .
The teams exchanged baskets to start the game, a three-pointer for Tulsa's Temira Poindexter and two-point jumper by Kelsey Ransom for the Hoyas.
Mady Cartwright knocked down two straight three-pointers for a 6-0 Tulsa run to take a 9-2 lead at the 8:11 mark.
Tulsa took an 11-point lead when Elise Hill's three-pointer put Tulsa ahead 19-8 with 4:23 remaining on the first quarter clock.
The opening period ended with Tulsa ahead 27-20, while shooting 67-percent from the field and a sizzling 78-percent on 7-of-9 from three-point range … the Hoyas shot an overall .500 from the field.
IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . .
Tulsa cooled off in the second quarter, hitting only 42-percent from the field but did connect on both of its three-point attempts.
The Hoyas had a 17-14 scoring advantage in the second period.
Georgetown got as close as one at 38-37 with 2:20 left on the first-half clock but the Hoyas were held scoreless from that point on as Delanie Crawford's three-pointer pushed Tulsa' lead back to four points at intermission, 41-37.
IN THE THIRD QUARTER . . .
Tulsa maintained the lead in the third quarter, by as many as nine three times and as little as two points also three times in the quarter.
The Hurricane scored the first five points of the period to take a nine-point lead, 46-37, at the 8:10 mark on a Cartwright three-pointer.
The two teams matched each other point-for-point in the third quarter with each scoring 18 points, while Tulsa held a 59-55 lead.
IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . .
Georgetown tied the game for the first time, 59-59, at the 7:31 mark on a layup by Graceann Bennett.
The game was tied again at 61-all, but Crawford's layup at the 6:24 put Tulsa ahead by two and became a 12-0 run to close out the game and take a 73-61 victory.
Tulsa outscored the Hoyas 14-6 in the final frame.
The Hoyas were held to just 3-of-16 from the field and 0-of-5 from three-point range in the final quarter.
