Tulsa Men Drop 4-1 Decision to Rice in AAC Quarterfinal Round

TULSA, Okla. — The fifth-seeded Tulsa men's tennis team stepped onto their home courts looking to capitalize on the momentum from Thursday's 4-1 win over Wichita State, but the No. 4 seed Rice Owls had other plans, halting the Golden Hurricane 4-1 Friday in the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference Men's Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Tulsa ends the season at 15-13 overall, while the 17-7 Owls, ranked No. 51 in the nation, advanced to the semifinal round where they'll face the one-seed No. 32 Memphis.

The Owls claimed the doubles point in two decisions as Tulsa duos fell 6-4 and 6-1 in the first and third positions, respectively. Senior Thiago Pernas and redshirt freshman Gus Tettamble left their match abandoned at five games all when Rice clinched the 1-0 advantage to start the day.

Senior Pierce Rollins put Tulsa on the board in a 6-1, 6-0 winner in his usual spot atop the lineup over Rice's Yasha Zemel. Tied 1-1 in the first set, Rollins would claim the next 11 games to secure his eighth consecutive win dating back to March.

After an injury forced freshman Victor Tosetto to retire with a one-set lead in the No. 6 position, Rice would take the five-slot 7-5, 6-1 before clinching and ending the dual match at 4-1 with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 decision in the fourth spot over Tulsa standout sophomore Timothy Carlsson Seger.
