IRVING, Texas — After garnering multiple ranked victories in both facets of play last week, The University of Tulsa's Pierce Rollins has been named the American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, announced by the league Tuesday. It's the first AAC award for the senior transfer from Texas A&M who's held down the No. 1 position in doubles and singles action for the Golden Hurricane this year.
A Tulsa native, Rollins went 2-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles action at home against conference foes No. 27 Memphis and South Florida. Against the league's top-ranked team in the Tigers, Rollins clinched the doubles point with sophomore partner Timothy Carlsson Seger in a hotly contested 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker win over then-35th-ranked Pablo Alemany and Charlie Barry. Rollins followed up in singles play with a two-set win over No. 55 Alemany in a final result of 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).
Rollins picked up his second ranked singles win of the weekend and third overall this season in Tulsa's 4-2 comeback win over South Florida. He went the distance against No. 65 Alvin Tudorica and came out on top in a back-and-forth three-set match that ended in a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 victory for the Hurricane's second team point of the day.
Now ranked No. 37 in the country in doubles action with Seger and No. 80 in singles, Rollins and the men's tennis squad will look to end the regular season on a high note in the four-match home finale, starting with matches against Lindenwood (2-9) on Friday, April 12, at 6 p.m., and Saturday, April 13, at 5 p.m. The Hurricane will welcome Temple (6-11) for a conference matchup between the Lindenwood matches for 10:30 a.m. start on Saturday and will wrap up the regular season against No. 44 SMU on Monday, April 15, at 5 p.m.
