PARIS, France — Former University of Tulsa men's tennis standout Marcelo Arévalo (El Salvador) alongside partner Mate Pavic (Croatia) have won the 2024 men's doubles title at the French Open in Paris over Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli from Italy. Arévalo earns his second grand slam doubles title after winning the French Open in 2022.
Arévalo and Pavic won their first major together as the No. 9 seed over the 11th-seeded Italian duo in 13 games across straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. The pair served a strong match with four aces to only one double fault, winning 47 service points to Vavassori and Bolelli's 37.
In a competitive first set, neither tandem led by more than one game as the score was tied five times. At five games all, Arévalo and Pavic stepped up and delivered two game wins to secure the first frame 7-5. In set two, Arévalo and Pavic broke a 3-3 deadlock and rode to a 6-3 finish to claim the title.
At Tulsa, Arévalo was a two-year letterwinner and all-conference player. He was named C-USA Player of the Year and ITA Central Region Player to Watch as a sophomore. Arevalo compiled a career 29-14 singles mark, and 30-11 doubles record during his tenure at TU (2009-11).
