CINCINNATI, Ohio — Marcelo Arévalo, a former standout tennis player for The University of Tulsa (2009-11), made history Monday as the first El Salvadorian to win a title of any kind at the Cincinnati Open, having taken the men's doubles championship with partner Mate Pavic of Croatia. The pair won the French Open doubles title in June and now have four ATP titles together.

Seeded fourth in Cincinnati, Arévalo, who stands as the No. 8 doubles player in the world, and Pavic defeated the wildcard American duo of Mackenzie McDonald and Alex Michelsen, 6-2, 6-4, in just one hour and two minutes.

After receiving a first-round bye, Arévalo and Pavic won their second-round (6-3, 7-6(2)) and quarterfinal (6-2, 6-4) matches in straight sets before escaping a tough semifinal battle in a 6-7(6), 7-6(3), 10-5 decision to reach Monday's final.

At Tulsa, Arévalo was a two-year letterwinner and all-conference player. He was named C-USA Player of the Year and ITA Central Region Player to Watch as a sophomore. Arevalo compiled a career 29-14 singles mark, and 30-11 doubles record during his tenure at TU.
