Golden Hurricane Surges in 6-0 Shutout over McNeese

8/25/2024 5:21:00 PM | Women's Soccer

TULSA, Okla. — Offense and defense both showed out for the Tulsa women's soccer team's first shutout of the year as the Golden Hurricane blew past McNeese 6-0 at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon. TU improves to 2-1-1, while the Cowgirls drop to 1-3 on the season.

The offense spent most of the game on McNeese's side of the field, registering a whopping 30 total shots, 13 in the first half and 17 in the second half. The Hurricane recorded 16 shots on goal, six of which made it into the net from four different players.

True freshman forwards Kaleigh Hart and Blaine Schutte stepped up with two goals each during the contest. Hart scored her first career goals on Sunday, while Schutte now has three on the year, a team-leading mark for the Hurricane.

Junior forward Jordan Frederick was all over the field for TU, assisting with a career-high three goals and sending in one of her own.

McNeese found Tulsa's side of the field only a handful of times. The Cowgirls finished with three shots, none of which were on goal.

Junior goalkeepers Tatum Sanders and Kylie Koeijmans split playing time at 45 minutes apiece guarding the poles. Sanders started the match and improved to 2-1-1 this season.

Tulsa will be back in action Thursday, Aug. 29, at Oral Roberts (1-2), where the Hurricane will look to take back the Mayor's Cup from their cross-town rivals. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. at the Case Soccer Complex.

How it Happened
Tulsa took no time getting on the board as the first goal of the game came in the 9th minute of regulation. Senior midfielder Karsen Aguirre took a powerful shot from center midfield that bounced off a Cowgirl defender's foot right into freshman forward Kaleigh Hart's possession in the goal area. From there, Hart rolled it into the lower left corner of the net for the first score of the match.

In the second of TU's 15 corner kicks, junior forward Jordan Frederick made a perfect kick from the far corner straight to Ashlyn Fernandez, who bounced it off her head from near the middle of the penalty area and sent the ball just past the reach of the Cowgirl goalie into the upper portion of the net.

The next two goals came from true freshman forward Blaine Schutte in the 26th and 32nd minutes of the contest. Both goals had two assisters and gave Tulsa the 4-0 lead at halftime. Her first score was set up by freshman midfielder Ady Bechtel, who sent the ball deep right to Frederick who crossed it over to Schutte for goal No. 1. Her second goal resulted from a deep crosser from Hannah Chance to Quinn Turner, who sent the ball flying onto Schutte's foot and into the net for Tulsa's fourth goal.

After assisting five different goals on the year, Frederick finally got her first of the season in the 48th minute by slamming the ball into the lower left back of the net. Hart sent the ball flying from the halfway line into a speeding Frederick for the team's fifth goal.

The sixth and final score of the day came from Hart in the 65th minute. Frederick took the ball down the right side of the field, juked out multiple defenders and sent the ball over to Hart, who rolled it in for her second goal of the day.

Multiple TU players made their first career appearances on the field near the end of the game, including Anastasia Govor, Avery Hudkins and Jordan Martens, while Kylie Koeijmans and Calista Siegmeier each played their first minutes of the 2024 season.
