Tulsa Suffers 1-0 Setback in Conference Opener at Rice

9/12/2024 9:59:00 PM | Women's Soccer

HOUSTON, Texas — The Tulsa women's soccer team fell 1-0 at Rice in the American Athletic Conference season opener Thursday night in Houston. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 4-3-2 and 0-1-0 in the league while the now 7-1-1 Owls remain undefeated at home and start the new season 1-0.

After a scoreless first half, Rice broke the deadlock with the only goal of the day by Leah Chancey in the 59th minute. Tulsa had many opportunities to score, but the stellar play of the Owls' goalkeeper Faith Hutchins kept the Hurricane out of the net with eight saves.

By 90 minutes, Rice had 22 shots and 13 on goal, while Tulsa had 17 total shots and sent the ball toward the net eight times. The Owls had nine corner kicks to Tulsa's two.

Tulsa returns home for the final nonconference contest of the year as the Hurricane will take on Oklahoma (6-1-0) at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium Sunday night at 7 p.m.

How it Happened
Neither team could score in the first half as each squad's goalkeeper and defense came in clutch multiple times. Tulsa came away with seven saves, five by GK Tatum Sanders and two from defenders in the box. TU shot the ball five times and only once on goal, while Rice took 12 shots and seven toward the poles.

Tulsa turned it up in the second half by shooting the ball 12 times and seven on goal, but none panned out.

Scoring the game-winning goal for Rice in the 59th minute was Leah Chancey, who Carsyn Martz and Catarina Albuquerque set up down the stretch. Tulsa came close to tying it up on a few occasions but couldn't escape the Owls for the first conference loss of the year.
