Golden Hurricane Beaten 4-0 at Kansas City

9/24/2024 9:46:00 PM | Men's Soccer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Tulsa's road struggles continued as the Golden Hurricane men's soccer team fell 4-0 at Kansas City inside Durwood Soccer Stadium on Tuesday night.

Tulsa (1-6-1, 0-1-0 The American) allowed a goal inside the opening 10 minutes for the third game in a row and was never able to get back into the match as Kansas City (5-2-2) won just its second game against the Hurricane all-time. It was a rainy Tuesday evening that included a lengthy delay before action got started nearly 40 minutes after scheduled start time.

The Roos doubled their lead in in the 42nd minute and added a third right before halftime to break the game open. The fourth came 10 minutes after halftime.

The Hurricane was outshot 26-11 and 10-3 in shots on target. Alex Lopez was in goal for Tulsa and came up with six saves, a season-high for him. Camilo Vargas had two of Tulsa's shots on target on Tuesday, while Luke Adams had the other just seconds after kickoff.

Tulsa returns to action at FIU on Sunday in another American Athletic Conference match.

How it Happened
It took just three minutes for Kansas City to open the scoring. Sora Shibata lobbed a cross to the top of the box on the left side. Miguel Fernandez met the lofted ball with a left-footed volley that ended up in the far-right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Roos took advantage of a defender slipping on the wet surface to go up 2-0 in the 42nd. Alex Lopez played the ball out to Gyuwong Chong, but as Chong tried to turn, he lost his footing, leaving a loose ball that was picked up by Gabrielle Galluccio. Galluccio sent Hector Taboada through, and he slotted the ball home.

Less than three minutes later, Jack Dean received the ball off a shot that rattled the crossbar and got pushed to the endline on the right side. Rather than play it across, he managed to chip the ball over the Tulsa defense and into the left side of the net from a difficult angle to give KC a 3-0 lead at the half.

In the 56th minute, Kansas City made it 4-0. Raphael Kistmann got on the end of a cross and was able to put a shot on target, but Lopez was there to make the save. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to hang on and Kistmann was able to follow-up and finish the score.
