Tulsa Cross Country Teams Compete with Nation’s Best in Two Big Meets

COLUMBIA, Mo. & MADISON, Wis. — The Tulsa women's and men's cross country teams competed in a pair of big meets Friday. Golden Hurricane runners from both teams saw tough competition from numerous ranked programs as the Tulsa women finished eighth of 38 teams in the morning at Missouri's Gans Creek Classic, and the men placed 19th of 24 squads at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison.

The Hurricane women finished the 6K course at a 20:56.84 average and was led by senior Robyn Kowalski's 20:37.7 performance for 28th place, with redshirt senior Chloe Hershenow right behind her at 20:38.8. Redshirt senior Ailey Mitchell was the third Hurricane to finish at 20:59.8 for 47th with juniors Alicen Ashley (55th) and Sophia McNerney (64th) rounding out Tulsa's top five finishers.

The top four placing teams were all nationally ranked in the latest USTFCCCA poll, and Tulsa finished eighth as a group with 214 points, beating out teams like Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa, Wichita State and Kansas State.

Later in the day, the Tulsa men took to the 8K course in Wisconsin. Three Tulsa men started the day with the meet's "B" race with redshirt senior Jaden Forester finishing 15th of 46 runners in 25:13.9.

In the main event, redshirt senior Chris McLeod paced Tulsa with a 24:25.8 finish for 70th overall. Redshirt freshman Ben Brown (24:28.6) took 74th, redshirt sophomore Charlie Krasnoff (24:31.5) placed 82nd, redshirt freshman James Knockton (24:34.0) finished 85th and sophomore Luke Birdseye rounded out TU's top-five with a 24:41.5 finish for 101st. As a group, Tulsa finished the course at a 24:32.28 average for 19th overall.

"In an incredibly stacked field that got out so fast, we didn't position ourselves super well to achieve the finish we wanted," Men's Head Coach Taylor Gulley said "We still had some guys, particularly younger guys, who stepped up and really closed well the last 1,000m. While we aren't happy with today, I do think we have a strong platform to build on over the coming weeks."

Up next for the Golden Hurricane is the Bradley Pink Classic for the women on Oct. 18 and the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals for the men on Oct. 19.
