Men’s Tennis Splits Matches on Opening Day

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa men's tennis team welcomed Omaha and Cornell Friday for a home doubleheader in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, escaping with a 4-3 victory over the Mavericks and falling short in a 4-0 loss to a tough Big Red team. The Golden Hurricane starts the 2025 spring season at 1-1.

The day started with doubles play in the morning against Omaha. Redshirt sophomore and 2025 captain Gus Tettamble and his junior teammate Luis Felipe Miguel captured the second position before redshirt junior Will Pellegrini and junior Reiya Komagata clinched the opening advantage at Doubles No. 3 with a 6-3 victory.

Both teams elected to let position No. 1 finish, which went to Omaha's Mikhail Korkunov and Bryan Kuntz in a 7-5 decision.

In singles play, Omaha jumped ahead 2-1 with straight-set wins at positions 1 and 6, taking advantage of Tulsa's last-minute lineup adjustments before singles action.

True freshman Connor Doig stepped up to deliver Tulsa's first singles win with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) victory at Singles No. 3 over Bryan Kuntz. Omaha took over the lead once more after taking court No. 2 6-4, 6-4.

Things briefly looked bleak for the Hurricane who was down 3-2 to the Mavericks until redshirt freshman Calum Jestin erased a 4-0 deficit in his third set at the fifth position to come back and win 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The momentum bled over to Tettamble who prevailed in back-to-back tiebreaker sets to seal the 4-3 comeback victory.

In the evening, Tulsa welcomed a tough Cornell squad that featured a nationally top-25-ranked singles player and two ranked doubles tandems.

The doubles point came down to sophomore Alex Okonkwo and junior Timothy Carlsson Seger against No. 61 Rushil Khosla and Eric Verdes at the peak of the lineup after Cornell took position No. 3 and Tulsa snagged No. 2. It came down to a tiebreaker set at six games all, but the Hurricane pair ran out of luck and steam as the Big Red's top duo came away with a 7-6 (9-7) winner to secure the opening score.

Five of the six Hurricane singles players fell behind a set to start singles play. Although there were signs of a potential TU comeback, Cornell ran away with wins in the first, fifth and sixth positions to clinch and end the dual match at 4-0.

The Tulsa men will hit the road for Fayetteville to take on Arkansas (3-0) on Sunday, Jan. 19, at noon Central.
