TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa (4-7-2, 3-3-0) overcame a first-half deficit to secure a 3-2 victory over Florida International University (5-7-2, 3-3-0) on Saturday at Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium. This marked the first three-goal game of the season for Tulsa, a notable achievement as FIU has only conceded three goals in a match twice before, both against ranked opponents.
The match between Tulsa and FIU saw early action with FIU's Eduardo Mustre opening the scoring in the sixth minute, assisted by Joao Domingues and Diego Sanchez. Tulsa responded in the 30th minute when Gijs Hovius equalized, receiving an assist from Jared Aguilar. This goal was Hovius's third of the season. However, FIU reclaimed the lead in the 35th minute with another goal from Mustre, this time assisted by Leonardo Consoloni and Nigel Van Haveren. The first half ended with FIU leading 2-1, despite several fouls and a yellow card issued to both teams.
Tulsa and the Panthers entered the second half tied, with the home team quickly capitalizing, as Will Applegate scored in the 53rd minute to achieve a 2-2 tie. This goal also marked Applegate's third of the season. The momentum shifted further in Tulsa's favor when Aguilar, assisted by Alex Cunningham, put Tulsa ahead 3-2 in the 69th minute. Aguilar not only scored his third goal of the season but also provided his fourth assist, making it the first game this year where an individual Tulsa player earned more than two points. Cunningham's assist was his second of the season. FIU's attempts to equalize were thwarted by Tulsa's defense and goalkeeper Carlito Saylon, who made a crucial save in the 87th minute. Despite FIU's active offense, including multiple corner kicks and shots, the Golden Hurricane maintained their lead to secure the win.
Tulsa improved to 4-7-2 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play. FIU moved to 5-7-2 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play.
In their next game, the Golden Hurricane will host Kansas City on October 22. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. in Tulsa, Okla., as they look to defend their home turf.
