Brayden Hipp Also Named a Weekly Honorable Mention
IRVING, Texas — With only one week remaining in the American Conference regular season, Tulsa's Jill Hanson took home both Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the week honors, the league announced Monday. They're her first major weekly awards following an honorable mention on September 29. The Golden Hurricane's Brayden Hipp was also named a Weekly Honorable Mention on Monday.
Hanson has been one of Tulsa's breakout stars this season and one of the most consistent performers on both sides of the ball, helping lead the Golden Hurricane to their first 20-win season in 11 years.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Hanson was a brick wall for Tulsa's front line this past weekend, putting up a league-high 2.17 blocks per set to finish with 13 total rejections through two straight-set wins over Charlotte and East Carolina. She led TU in blocking for both matches, earning seven block assists against the 49ers and followed up with two block solos and four block assists against the Pirates. Overall, she's led the Golden Hurricane in blocking 12 times this year.
On offense, she hit for .333 after landing 15 kills to only five errors on 30 swings, contributing to her 24.5 points across the weekend (4.08 per set).
Hipp earns her first Weekly Honorable Mention to go with her conference-leading four Setter of the Week Awards. She finished second in the league this week for assists at 11 flat per set. She also earned four setter dump kills without a single error on seven attempts in each match for a .571 hitting percentage on the week. On the defensive side, Hipp also earned 21 digs at a rate of 3.5 per set, while landing five blocks. Finally, she picked up her 13th double-double this season against ECU with 31 assists and a team-high 14 digs.
American Conference play concludes this weekend as TU heads to Philadelphia to take on Temple on Friday, November 14, at 5 p.m. before coming home for Senior Day on Sunday, November 16, against Tulane at 1 p.m. The American Championship, which Tulsa has already clinched a bid to and currently stands as the No. 3 seed, is set for November 21-23 in Tampa, Fla.
