TAMPA, Fla. — The University of Tulsa defeated the University of South Florida in the first round of the American Conference Championship 3-2 on Thursday at Corbett Soccer Stadium, with Tulsa scoring the decisive goal in overtime. The win means Tulsa will make their first appearance in the conference tournament semifinals since the 2021 season

The match began with the Golden Hurricane taking an early lead in the 22nd minute when Gyuwon Chong scored his second goal of the season, assisted by Jared Aguilar. Interestingly, Chong's first goal of the season also came against South Florida in Tulsa's 2-1 loss to them in the regular season. The Bulls responded quickly, equalizing in the 26th minute with a goal from Jakob Auby, assisted by Fabio Bozesan and João Belmudes. The home team then took the lead in the 32nd minute, thanks to Tyler Richardson's goal, with assists from Brandon Nyagurungo and Asher Jones. Both teams had additional scoring opportunities, but strong goalkeeping from Jahiem Wickham and Carlito Saylon kept the score at 2-1 in favor of the hosts by the end of the first half.

The visitors equalized the match in the 53rd minute with a goal from Alex Cunningham, assisted by Nils Orywol. This marked Cunningham's second goal of the season, while it was Orywol's third assist of the year. The Golden Hurricane maintained offensive pressure throughout the half, taking multiple shots and earning several corner kicks. Wickham made crucial saves, including attempts from Chong and Aimar Membrila. Despite late efforts from both teams, including a saved shot in the 88th minute by Saylon, the match ended in a 2-2 draw at the end of the second half.

Tulsa secured a dramatic victory in overtime with a goal from Arnau Pedrola Fortuny in the 91st minute. This was Pedrola Fortuny's first goal of the season. His decisive strike was assisted by Chris Nezianya, marking Nezianya's second assist of the season, breaking the 2-2 deadlock early in the extra period. The match concluded at the end of overtime, sealing a 3-2 win for the Golden Hurricane, who scored three goals in a game for the second time this season. This result marked the end of a closely contested game.

The Golden Hurricane holds a record of 5-8-4 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play. The Bulls stand at 9-3-5 overall with a 5-2-1 mark in conference play. Tulsa will face FAU in the American Conference Championship Semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 2:30 CT in Charlotte, N.C.
