No. 46 Men’s Tennis Splits Matches with No. 18 Baylor, Oral Roberts

2/23/2025 8:46:00 PM | Men's Tennis

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa men's tennis team went 1-1 Sunday after falling 4-0 to No. 18 Baylor (8-6) and sweeping cross-town program Oral Roberts (2-7) in a 7-0 winner in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The 46th-ranked Golden Hurricane are now 7-7 overall on the year.

The Baylor match was highlighted by a major upset in doubles play, where Tulsa's unranked pairing of sophomore Alex Okonkwo and junior Timothy Carlsson Seger went up against No. 12 Marko Miladinovic and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen at the No. 1 position. Neither duo led by more one game until Tulsa snapped a 3-3 deadlock and went on to win 6-3, earning their first win over a ranked opponent together.

Baylor would go on to claim Nos. 2 and 3 before cruising to straight-set wins in the first, fourth and fifth positions in singles play, leaving junior Luis Felipe Miguel up one set at No. 2, Seger tied at one set all at No. 3, and junior Reiya Komagata down a set at No. 6.

Against ORU, Tulsa swept the doubles matches in dominating fashion with Okonkwo and Seger clinching the opening score for the Hurricane.

Four of TU's six singles players needed only two sets to take care of their Golden Eagle counterparts. Junior Reiya Komagata dropped only one game on the way to a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 4, Okonkwo cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory atop the lineup and freshman Connor Doig clinched the team win at 4-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set winner over Eli Brewer in the No. 3 position.

The two teams elected to play out the remaining matches which all finished in three sets. Redshirt freshman Calum Jestin was the first of the three to close out in a 4-6, 6-1, [10-4] tiebreaker win in the six-spot. Freshman Nikola Puntaric erased a one-set deficit in the No. 2 court to prevail 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Finally, all eyes were on redshirt sophomore Gus Tettamble in the fifth court. ORU's Jonathan Evans gave Tettamble some trouble in the second and third sets, but TU's team captain kept this cool and escaped in a 7-5 third set to win 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 to secure Tulsa's 7-0 sweep of the Golden Eagles.

The Tulsa men will head to the east coast to take on a pair of strong Ivy League squads, starting with No. 8 Columbia (6-3) on Friday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m. Central, and ending the weekend at No. 24 Princeton (10-4) on Sunday, March 2, at 12:00 p.m. Central.
