Tulsa Women’s Basketball Enjoys 28-Point Road Win over Charlotte

2/5/2025 10:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Tulsa women's basketball team earned its first American Athletic Conference road win of the season in dominating fashion, cruising to an 81-53 win at Charlotte off the backs of four Golden Hurricane double-digit scorers. TU improved to 12-11 overall and 6-5 in conference action while the 49ers dropped to 7-14 and 2-8 in league play.

Senior Delanie Crawford paced the Hurricane with 23 points, scored entirely from 3-pointers and free throws. She finished with seven treys (7-10) – the most recorded in a single game by an AAC player and the second-most made in TU history – to go with a 2-for-2 mark from the line Wednesday.

Tulsa shot the ball with deadly accuracy, going 12-of-24 in 3-pointers and 17-for-18 in free throws, of which TU started the game 15-for-15 and made 14 straight in the first half. Senior Kristol Ayson in her first start for the Hurricane led with seven made free throws, a career-high.

By the end, the Hurricane went 44.1% from the field (26-59), 50% in threes (12-24) and 94.4% at the line (17-18). All three marks surpassed Charlotte, who finished 31.7% in shooting (20-63), including 27.3% in triples (6-22), and 77.8% from the charity line (7-9).

Crawford went down as one of four double-figure scorers. Joining her was Ayson (15), junior Hadley Periman (12) and sophomore Mady Cartwright (11). Crawford and Cartwright led the Hurricane with four assists each.

Periman and Cartwright were the defensive leaders for Tulsa's win as Periman finished with four blocks and 11 boards to secure her sixth double-double and Cartwright came away with four steals.

As a unit, Tulsa out-rebounded the Niners 42-35, and the bench outscored Charlotte's 24-15.

"I really felt like we played a complete game today," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "We had to make sure to defend well when they pushed back a bit in the second quarter. Then we turned around and hit them with a run of our own, and that was a great growth moment for us. We shared the ball so incredibly well today. It was so much fun to see the way out team was playing together. It didn't always convert to points, but we played the way that we're capable of playing."

Charlotte's Keanna Rembert led the 49ers with 12 points and nine rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST QUARTER . . .
Tulsa's first three offensive possessions ended in consecutive made 3-pointers, starting with Hadley Periman with Tulsa's opening shot and Delanie Crawford for the next two triples. After Charlotte sank a three of their own in their opening shot, they went 0-for-7 from the field until Keanna Rembert made a mid-range jumper at 6:13.

Tulsa got into a small scoring drought spanning 3:27 until Jade Clack took the ball to the rim for an easy layup. Delanie Crawford made her third 3-pointer just a few seconds later on a fast break, bringing the score to 14-5 at 4:44.

Layups by Clack and Paige Bradley extended TU's lead to 18-7. A 7-2 run by the Niners in the final two minutes of the quarter cut their deficit to six at 20-14 TU heading into the second frame.

IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . .
Hadley Periman scored Tulsa's first four points of the second quarter, including a pair of made free throws at 7:20 to move the Hurricane up 24-18.

Delanie Crawford proceeded to make her fourth 3-pointer of the night at 6:13. After that, Charlotte used a 10-2 scoring run fueled by two treys from Hayleigh Brelund to bring the score to 29-28 Tulsa with 4:06 reading the clocks.

The Hurricane kept their cool, however, and made eight straight free throws from Kristol Ayson, Cam Mathews and Mady Cartwright, who added a layup between her first and second set of free throws to help push Tulsa ahead 39-31 with less than two minutes to go in the half.

TU moved to 11-for-11 in free throws in the quarter when Kristol Ayson drew a shouting foul and made her third and fourth free throws of the night. They were the final two points of the half, which were part of an 8-0 scoring run in the last 2:21 and a 12-3 run over the final 3:36. Tulsa led 41-31 at halftime.

At the half, the Hurricane was shooting 35.5% from the field (11-31), including 41.7% from deep (5-12), and 100% at the line for a perfect 14-14 mark. Charlotte was 35.3% in field goal shooting (12-34), 38.5% from 3-point land (5-13) and 2-for-2 at the line.

IN THE THIRD QUARTER . . .
Kristol Ayson opened the second half with Tulsa's 15th-consecutive made free throw, which is where the streak would end after missing her second attempt.

Tulsa used a 9-4 run that included 3-pointers from Hadley Periman and Cam Mathews and a layup from Ayson, putting TU up 52-35 when the media break hit at 4:42.

Almost 90 seconds later, Mady Cartwright took the ball to the basket on a fast break and Ayson followed up with a mid-range jumper. After four unanswered points by Charlotte's Caroline Theil, Delanie Crawford swished her fifth triple of the night on a pass from Mady Cartwright. The score moved the Hurricane up by 20 points at 59-39 with 1:20 left in the third.

A last-minute 2-point jumper by Charlotte put the score at 59-41 to end the quarter.

IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . .
Paige Bradley and Delanie Crawford made Tulsa's ninth and 10th 3-pointers of the day to open the final frame of the game. It was Crawford's sixth three, which came at the 8:43 mark.

Mady Cartwright finally got in on the 3-point action with a trey of her own for Tulsa's 11th. It moved the Hurricane up to 70 points and a 25-point lead at 70-45. Cartwright continued TU's hot streak at the lineup with two made free throws a minute later, putting the Hurricane at 17-for-18.

Crawford made a whopping seventh 3-pointer at the 5:10 mark on the clock, moving to 23 points against the Niners.

The Hurricane continued to answer all of Charlotte's scores and never let up until the final buzzer, where Tulsa finished on top 81-53.
