TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa men's tennis team started American Athletic Conference play with a bang, earning a thrilling 4-3 victory thanks to strong doubles play and a clinching victory by junior Luis Felipe Miguel in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center's No. 2 court on Friday night. The win snaps a four-match losing streak and puts the Golden Hurricane at 8-11 and drops Charlotte to 7-6.
Doubles action was dominated by Tulsa with 6-3 and 6-4 wins in the second and third positions, respectively. Redshirt junior Will Pellegrini and redshirt freshman Calum Jestin clinched the key opening score for the Hurricane in the No. 3 position, leaving TU's No. 1 duo unfinished at five games all.
Sophomore Alex Okonkwo won his third match in the last four outings after taking the No. 1 court in a 6-3, 6-2 decision, shutting down Vasco Prata in two sets. Okonkwo improved to 18-11 overall and 8-7 in dual matches.
Charlotte responded with a straight victory (6-2, 6-4) in the sixth spot before junior Reiya Komagata snapped a four-match losing streak with a 6-3, 6-3 winner in the fifth slot over Brett Gloria, putting the Hurricane within striking distance up 3-1 on the 49ers.
The remaining matches on court Nos. 2-4 all entered third sets with junior Luis Felipe Miguel (No. 2) and freshman Nikola Puntaric (No. 4) each forcing a third stanza with second-set wins.
The No. 3 court would fall first out of that group to Charlotte in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision to make it a 3-2 dual match in favor of the Hurricane. Then, the Niner closed out position four 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to knot things up at 3-3, putting the pressure of the match on Miguel in the No. 2 court. The score was tied 3-3 in the third set when Miguel became the last man standing for TU.
At one point in the match, Miguel was down 4-6, 4-5 on the edge of a loss to Matias Iturbe. Staring defeat in the eye, he rattled off three straight game wins to win the second set 7-5. Then, with all eyes on him, Miguel escaped the 3-3 deadlock in the third frame and clinched the exciting 4-3 victory for the Hurricane with an official result of 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to take the No. 2 court. It was his third consecutive win, helping him improve to 11-9 overall and 8-4 in dual matches.
The Tulsa men will remain home to take on Rice (10-5) this Sunday, March 16, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, with first serves at 11 a.m.
