Tulsa Drops 4-3 Heartbreaker to Oklahoma State
3/5/2025 9:27:00 PM | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa men's tennis team hosted a struggling Oklahoma State squad (5-8) in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center and came up just a few games shy of a needed win, falling in a 4-3 heartbreaker Wednesday night. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 7-10 on the season.
Tulsa dominated doubles play en route to earning the opening score of the match. Sophomore Alex Okonkwo and junior Timothy Carlsson Seger overpowered 48th ranked Alessio Basile and Nicolas Kobelt in a 6-1 decision atop the lineup before redshirt freshman Calum Jestin and redshirt junior Will Pellegrini ran away with a 6-1 win at position three for the doubles point clinch. Junior Luis Felipe Miguel and redshirt sophomore Gus Tettamble were right behind at 5-4 when they left their match unfinished after their teammates' clinch.
Singles play turned into a back-and-forth affair with five of the six courts finishing in two sets. OSU struck first with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at Singles No. 4. Then, Okonkwo turned in a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 1, winning match point on a service ace.
Less than five minutes later, the Cowboys tied the match up at 2-2 when they cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 finish at the bottom of the lineup. Moments later, the two teams traded wins once more with Miguel capturing the second position 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 three seconds before Oklahoma State's Derek Pham prevailed in 6-4 sets at the third spot.
It all came down to Tulsa's Reiya Komagata against Ian Bracks in the No. 5 court. It was the only match of the day to reach a third set, which Bracks forced with a 6-4 second-set victory. With all eyes on the two players, Bracks snapped a 3-3 deadlock midway through the set and ran away with three straight game wins to snatch the 4-3 team win from Tulsa.
Up next for the Tulsa men is a road test at No. 8 Arizona (11-1) on Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m. Central.
