5/27/2025 12:08:00 PM | Track and Field
TULSA, Okla. — Redshirt senior Shay McEvoy and true freshman Sara Morefield have earned the opportunity to compete for a spot in the NCAA Track and Field Championships (June 11-14) this week at the NCAA West First Rounds hosted by Texas A&M from May 28-31. The standout Golden Hurricane runners qualified for first-round action after declaring for the meet with national top-48 times in their respective events this outdoor season.
McEvoy, a two-time all-conference runner this season, will kick things off on Wednesday, May 28, in the men's 10,000m semifinal at 9:10 p.m. Central. He enters the week's action with the west region's 39th-best 10K mark at 28:22.95, a career-best that he earned at the Stanford Invitational on April 4. McEvoy will need to place in the top 12 out of 47 other competitors for a ticket to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Morefield, The American's champion in the women's 3,000m steeplechase, is set to take on the event on Saturday, May 31, at 5:40 p.m. Central. She owns the region's 44th-fastest clip at 10:19.50, a new personal best that she set at the AAC Championships. She made history as Tulsa's first true freshman to win the steeplechase conference title just 10 days ago. To advance to Eugene, Morefield will need a top-3 heat placement or grab one of the remaining three at-large spots as the next-fastest overall marks.
Mild precipitation is expected this week in College Station, Texas, along with scattered thunderstorms on Wednesday. Fans can watch all four days of the NCAA West First Rounds on ESPN+ or follow the live results here.
