Tulsa Drops Both Games of Doubleheader with Florida Atlantic

5/3/2025 8:26:00 PM | Softball

TULSA, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane softball team lost 13-2 and 5-0 in a pair of games against the Florida Atlantic Owls on Saturday afternoon at the Collins Family Softball Complex. Friday's game was postponed due to field conditions following heavy rain earlier in the week.

Tulsa drops to 20-31 on the season and 8-18 in American Athletic Conference play. FAU moves to 43-9 and 22-4 in league contests. With the win in game one, Florida Atlantic clinched The American Regular Season Championship for the second consecutive year.

Maura Moore (13-15) got the start and took the loss in the opener. She went an inning and a third and was tagged for five runs on five hits with a walk. Alexa Hopkins pitched 4.2 innings in relief, allowing six runs on seven hits. She walked five and struck out a batter. Abby Hayes closed out the seventh inning and was responsible for two runs on two hits.

Brinly Maples (5-7) spun her fifth complete game of the season in the finale of the day. She was the losing pitcher on record but kept Tulsa within striking distance for the majority of the contest. She allowed five runs and gave up 12 hits, adding four strikeouts.

Autumn Court (22-2) got the win for the Owls in the opener, throwing four innings and giving up three hits and two runs with a trio of walks and four strikeouts. Ainsley Lamb picked up her 10th save with three innings of work and only a hit allowed.

Jaden Martin (6-4) tossed FAU's first perfect game since 2002 in game two, not allowing a single baserunner in seven innings of work with two strikeouts.

Maci Cole hit her 10th home run of the season with a solo blast in the bottom of second inning. She scored both runs of the game for Tulsa, coming in on a bases loaded walk administered to Elle Rouse in the first inning. Annika Dill singled in the first inning of game one to extend her hitting streak to nine games before it ended in the second game. She added a second hit in the third inning. Faith Russell doubled in the seventh.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game One
A walk and a single got the game going for FAU. They scored two runs in the first on sacrifice flies out to left field.

Maci Cole drew a leadoff walk in the first inning, her 33rd freebie of the season. After a strikeout, Dill singled to right. Amber Turner was hit by an 0-1 pitch with two outs to load the bases for Elle Rouse. Rouse battled to a full count and then took the payoff pitch low for ball four, bringing in Cole to cut the deficit to 2-1. Tulsa left the bags loaded, though.

The Owls struck again in the second with consecutive doubles to open the frame and make it 3-1. A triple brought in the fourth run of the game before a single made it 5-1 Owls and ended Moore's night.

TU opened the bottom of the second with back-to-back strikeouts at the bottom of the order, giving FAU three in a row. Cole stepped up for the second time in the game and delivered again, blasting a solo shot off the gate past the wall in left field. That would be Tulsa's last run of the game.

FAU made Tulsa pay for a pair of leadoff walks as a two-out double gave the visitors a 7-2 lead after three. The bats went quiet until the fifth inning when a solo shot from Kiley Shelto gave FAU an 8-2 lead. A walk, single and a double later and the Owls lead 9-2.

The seventh opened with another solo home run from Shelto to push the lead to 10-2. A walk later and Hayes entered the contest. She administered another walk before a single to center scored the 11th run. A two-RBI double ended the scoring as the Owls took a 13-2 lead and shut down the Hurricane in the bottom of the seventh.

Tulsa was outhit 14-4 in the loss and the Hurricane committed the game's only error in the seventh inning, but it was of no consequence. FAU left eight on base while Tulsa left seven. Both teams left the bases loaded once.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game Two
After the offensive outburst in game one, the second game was relatively quiet. FAU was held to just a single run each in the second, third and fourth innings before two in the seventh.

Things started a one-out double in the second before a single up the middle scored the first run of the game. In the third, the Owls recorded a single, out, single, out and then a single through the left side to score a run before another out to end the frame. The Owls recorded their third sac fly of the day, first of game two, in the fourth to go ahead 3-0.

In the final frame, a hit batter started the inning for the visitors. After a bunt single, an infield fly forced the first out. Back-to-back singles brought in two more runs as the Owls took a 5-0 lead, which would prove to be the final score.

Tulsa was outhit 12-0 in the loss and neither team committed an error. The Owls left nine on base and TU zero, as they never had a baserunner in the loss. Of FAU's 12 hits, only three were for extra bases as the Owls took advantage of walks, singles and hit batters to do most of their damage.
