TAMPA, Fla. – A three-run home run in the sixth inning proved the difference as the University of Tulsa fell 5-2 to Wichita State in the second round of the American Athletic Conference Softball Championship Wednesday afternoon in USF Softball Stadium.
The Golden Hurricane finish the season with a 21-33 record and went 1-1 in the conference tournament, beating UTSA 1-0 in a contest earlier in the day. Wichita State improves to 29-24-1 and will advance to face the No. 4-seeded North Texas in Thursday's quarterfinal.
Tulsa scored runs in the opening two innings, including a home run from freshman Aliya Scarborough, her second of the season. Wichita State scored runs in the third and fourth innings to even the game. After two hit batters in the bottom of the sixth, Camryn Compton hit a three-run homer on the first pitch she saw to give Wichita State its first lead, 5-2. This is the second straight season Wichita State has had a late-inning comeback against Tulsa in The American Championship.
Maura Moore (13-16) took the loss but was as sharp as ever in the complete-game effort. She was tagged for five runs but allowed just four hits and no walks with no strikeouts. Her two hit batters came back to haunt her, and two of the four Shockers hits were for extra bases, a double and the homer.
Ryley Nihart got the call for the Shockers and the win, also going the distance. She allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout.
Joining Scarborough with extra-base hits were Maci Cole and Paige Knight with a double each, and left fielder Whitney Holcomb collected two doubles. Tulsa outhit Wichita State 7-4 but left on-base compared to two stranded from the Shockers. Tulsa also committed two errors while Wichita State had one, which led to a TU run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Maci Cole opened the game with a double down the right field line to get Tulsa going. Faith Russell grounded out to the shortstop and Cole baited a throw from the first baseman toward third. The throw was wild, and Cole raced home to score on the error.
With one out in the second, Scarborough stepped to the plate and took a 1-2 pitch just over the leaping grasp of the left fielder for a solo home run. It was her second homer of her career and gave TU a 2-0 lead.
A leadoff single in the third was Wichita State's first hit of the ballgame. After a sacrifice bunt moved her to second a flyout advanced to third, the Shockers got on the scoreboard with a single to right field, cutting the TU lead in half, 2-1.
The Shockers tied the game in the third. A leadoff double and sacrifice bunt had the tying run 60 feet from home. The next batter hit a fly ball to right that was caught by Rouse. Her throw was on the money to catch the runner, but after review the umpires called obstruction, allowing the run to score.
In the sixth, two Wichita State batters reached base after getting hit by a pitch. The next batter up after the second hit-by-pitch was Compton. She swung at the first pitch and hit a home run to left to give Wichita State the 5-2 lead that would serve as the final.
