IRVING, Texas. — After jumping to 3-0 in American Conference action with an exciting pair of wins over Tulane and Temple, the Tulsa women's basketball team has swept the American weekly awards for January 12, with junior guard Mady Cartwright becoming a two-time Player of the Week and Dora Toman taking home her fourth Freshman of the Week award.
This is the third time in program history Tulsa has swept weekly conference awards. The first pair to do it was Larrissa Williams and TU Hall of Famer Taleya Mayberry, who took home Conference USA Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, on February, 15, 2010. Then, Rebecca Lescay (American Player of the Week) and Temira Poindexter (American Freshman of the Week) did it on December 20, 2021.
Cartwright brings home her second Player of the Week award this season after dominating the court for the Golden Hurricane. The third-year starter from Greenwood, Ark., led the league with 25.5 points to go with four blocks per game. She helped push Tulsa to a 17-point comeback win at Tulane with 20 points, 11 of which came at the free throw line on 12 attempts.
Then, Cartwright put on a show for Hurricane faithful in Friday's win over Temple, leading the Golden Hurricane with a career-best 31 points off eight field goals, 10/11 free throws made and a perfect 5/5 clip from 3-point range. It was the first ever 5-for-5 3-point game by a TU player, and she became the first player in the country this season to score over 30 points while landing five 3-pointers without a miss.
Toman continues to lead the American Conference in Freshman of the Week honors. She now has four to her name with the next closest freshman having just two awards.
Toman was all over the court for the Golden Hurricane once again, averaging 10 points, 4.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals with an assist/turnover ratio of 1.5 through Tulsa's two conference wins. She made 70% of her shots (7/10) and went perfect from 3-point land (4/4) as well.
In TU's 17-point comeback win at Tulane, Toman helped coordinate the victory with 13 points, six rebounds, two steals and a team-leading five assists. Then, she put up seven points and led the Golden Hurricane once more in assists with four. Toman has led Tulsa in assists for nine games this year, while also leading the team in boards and steals six times, blocks three times and points twice.
Tulsa is 7-0 when Toman has four or more assists in a game and 4-0 when she scores over 10 points.
Tulsa will continue American Conference play on Tuesday, January 13, at East Carolina (11-6, 3-1 American). Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
