Tulsa Earns 3-1 Road Win at Wichita State

10/2/2026 9:21:00 PM | Volleyball

WICHITA, Kan. — Tulsa earned their third straight win to open American Conference play, downing Wichita State 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-11, 25-20) in Wichita on Friday night. Tulsa hit .244 with 48 kills and 14 service aces while holding Wichita State to a .133 hitting percentage.

Senior outside hitter Olivia Vance had another impressive outing for the Golden Hurricane, this time putting away a season-best 17 kills with only one error on 38 swings for a .421 hitting clip and finishing with two blocks and five digs.

"Knowing that playing with joy and loving the game and each other has really helped us stay consistent during this strong start to conference play," said Vance.

Brittany Bacorn (23 assists) and Meg Goodwin (19 assists) took care of the setting for TU in a 6-2 system. Bacorn would go on to finish with a team-high 15 digs to put away her fifth double-double of the season.

Isabella Ocampo almost got a double-double herself, recording 11 kills and nine digs on the night. It's her first double-figure kill match this season and second of her career.

Tulsa answered an early 2-0 deficit with a kill by Ava Steffe and a block by Steffe and Jill Hanson, then moved in front 6-5 on Vance's kill and stayed level through 8-8. Wichita State pushed ahead 14-10, but kills by Hanson and Campbell Hague and a Lauren Patterson ace brought Tulsa within 14-13. The Shockers scored the next seven points to build a 21-13 lead before TU cut back into the set with a block by Maegan Mills and Hague, a Hague kill and consecutive Mills aces. After Wichita State reached set point at 24-18, Hague added another kill and Tulsa took three more points on Shocker errors before the home side closed the set 25-22.

Tulsa moved from a 4-2 deficit to an 8-5 lead in the second set, getting kills from Emma Blaine and Vance, a Wichita State attack error and a Mills ace during the early push. Wichita State answered to go in front and later led 14-12, but TU responded with a Kat Cooper kill, two Patterson aces, a Vance kill and a Wichita State bad set to move ahead 17-14 before Vance added another kill for an 18-15 lead. The Shockers pulled even at 18-18 and again at 21-21, keeping the set tight into the final points. An Engel service error put Tulsa back in front, Isabella Ocampo followed with consecutive kills, and after a Wichita State point, Cooper finished the set with a kill for a 25-22 Tulsa win.

Tulsa opened the third set with consecutive Ocampo service aces and a Vance kill from Bacorn for a 3-0 lead. Wichita State stayed within 8-5, but Tulsa scored the next three points on two Ocampo-Hanson blocks around a Bacorn ace to move ahead 11-5. After Tulsa led 16-8, Vance put down a kill to start a six-point run that included a Meg Goodwin serving stretch, kills by Vance and Hague, and Wichita State attack errors for a 22-8 margin. Mills added an ace for set point at 24-9, and after the Shockers scored twice, Steffe finished the set with a kill from Goodwin for a 25-11 Tulsa win.

Tulsa built a 5-0 lead to open the fourth set, with Ocampo starting the run on a kill from Patterson, adding two service aces and Vance closing the stretch with a kill from Bacorn. The Golden Hurricane kept the margin at 14-5 after a Hague ace and an Ocampo kill, then moved ahead 19-11 with points that included a Cooper block. Wichita State cut into the gap with five straight points to make it 19-16, but Hague stopped the run with a kill from Bacorn and later added another ace for a 23-18 Tulsa lead. After Wichita State got within 23-20, a service error brought Tulsa to set point and Ocampo finished the 25-20 set win with a kill from Bacorn.

Up next, Tulsa volleyball will visit UAB (6-9, 0-3 American) on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. at Hoover High School Competition Gym in Hoover, Ala.
