9/27/2026 4:26:00 PM | Volleyball
TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (10-3, 2-0 American) earned a competitive 3-1 victory (25-18, 26-28, 25-17, 25-16) Sunday afternoon over Memphis (5-7, 0-2) in front of 1,550 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Sophomore middle Jill Hanson reminded everyone why she was the American Conference's Preseason Player of the Year after she came away with a double-double resulting from 12 blocks and 11 kills on .300 hitting. It's the second time this season she's put up over 10 blocks with the first being against South Dakota State (17 kills, 10 blocks) just two weeks ago.
"We prepared really well," said Hanson. "We love each other on this team. We are each other's biggest supporters, and it shows on the court. We have this confidence and joy that comes through every time we play, and it's fantastic."
Senior opposite hitter Emma Blaine got in on the block party with a career-high seven block assists to help Tulsa finish with a season-high 16 team blocks.
Senior hitter Olivia Vance led TU for the second match in a row in kills, finishing with 12 on the day while sophomore hitter Isabella Ocampo (15) and senior libero Lauren Patterson (13) each eclipsed the 10-dig mark in the match.
Setters Brittany Bacorn and Meg Goodwin ran Tulsa's offense in a 6-2 rotation. Bacorn finished with 23 assists and Goodwin had a career-best 20 assists.
After the opening set stayed even through 10-10, Ava Steffe's kill, two Vance kills and a Campbell Hague kill pushed Tulsa to a 14-10 lead. The Tigers cut the margin to 15-13, but Tulsa won seven of the next eight rallies behind an Emma Blaine kill, a solo block by Jill Hanson, a Hague ace, a shared block by Blaine and Hanson and another Steffe kill to move ahead 22-14. The Tigers took the next three points before Isabella Ocampo answered with a kill, and after another Tigers kill, the Golden Hurricane closed the set on two Tigers attack errors for a 25-18 win.
After the Tigers moved in front 7-6, Tulsa answered with Hanson's kill and Brittany Bacorn's ace, then pushed ahead 11-8 with another Hanson kill and a Steffe-Hanson block. The Tigers came back to tie the set at 11-11, but TU rebuilt separation at 18-14 behind an Ocampo kill and a Hanson-Blaine block. The Tigers pulled even at 21-21 and moved ahead 23-21 on Abigail Schlueter's ace before Tulsa tied it at 23-23 with a Vance kill and Goodwin ace. The teams traded points through 26-26, but the Tigers closed the set with kills by Amanda Hardt and Genesis Rodriguez for a 28-26 win.
Tulsa built a 4-1 lead on two Vance kills and a Tigers setting error, but the Tigers answered with six straight points, including an Abigail Schlueter ace and two Arianna Mongare blocks, to move in front 7-4. Steffe stopped that stretch with a kill, and Goodwin's serve carried Tulsa through the next seven points as Hague, Vance, Ocampo and Blaine produced kills in an 8-0 surge that put Tulsa ahead 12-7. The Tigers cut the gap to 13-12 after Caitlyn Little's kill and Amanda Hardt's ace, but Ocampo's kill restored a two-point cushion and Hague served a four-point Tulsa run to 18-12 that included a Hanson-Blaine block, a Hanson kill and a Hague ace. The Golden Hurricane kept separation from there, getting blocks involving Ocampo, Hanson and Steffe Steffe kill, a Vance kill and Patterson's ace before a Tigers attack error closed the set at 25-17.
The fourth set was tied six times early, with the Tigers moving ahead 7-6 on Caitlyn Little's kill before Tulsa took the next three points on a Little attack error, another Tigers error and Bacorn's ace for a 9-7 lead. After the Tigers got one point back, Tulsa put together a 6-0 run from 9-8 to 15-8, getting kills from Vance, Hanson and Bacorn along with a Hanson block. The Tigers answered with five straight points, including an Abigail Schlueter ace and kills by Lillian Hamilton and Arianna Mongare, to cut Tulsa's lead to 17-14. Tulsa steadied the set from there, using a Tigers service error, a Hague kill, a Blaine kill, a Hague-Ocampo block and back-to-back Ocampo kills to close out the set 25-16.
Up next, Tulsa will hit the road to take on Wichita State (4-10, 1-1 American) on Friday, Oct. 2, and UAB (6-7, 0-1 American) on Sunday, Oct. 4.
