Tulsa Sweeps into American Championship Quarterfinals with Win Over UTSA

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa men's tennis (16-12) earned a 4-0 win over No. 11 seed UTSA (5-15) on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the American Conference Men's Tennis Championship.
The Golden Hurricane will face No. 3 seed Memphis (12-11), which received a first-round bye, in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Tulsa.
TU will aim to break its recent quarterfinal barrier, advancing past that round only once in the last nine seasons.
In doubles, Tulsa erased early deficits on multiple courts and secured the point to take the early lead. Victor Tosetto and Gus Tettamble finished first with a 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot. Nikita Volonski and Timothy Carlsson Seger clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 result on court two.
Tulsa controlled the match in straight sets in singles matches. Nikita Volonski put the first point on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Reiya Komagata and Tosetto followed from the bottom of the lineup, winning in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-3, respectively.
The final two singles victories marked milestones for the Golden Hurricane. Tosetto's clinch gave him his 10th singles win of the season, while Komagata recorded the 100th win of his collegiate career. He joins Carlsson Seger as the two current Tulsa players to reach that mark.
"We have a lot of good teams in this conference and UTSA is a very good team. In first rounds of conference tournaments, anything can happen. Everybody's excited, people are nervous, and you go through all of that. I thought we did a good job of maintaining all the way through on all three doubles and singles," said head coach Vince Westbrook of the team's performance. "We never went away because a lot of these matches end up so tight with everyone even. You have high, low split sets, as you'll see as the tournament keeps going."
Fans can attend tomorrow's 2 p.m. quarterfinal match at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center to support the Golden Hurricane.
