Behind the Hall of Famer: Julia Silva

When Julia Silva received the news of her induction into the Tulsa Athletic Hall of Fame, the honor felt bigger than herself. "It's a great honor!" Silva said. "Getting into the TU Hall of Fame was not something I thought about. But now I'm looking back and I feel I am representing all my teammates and coaches who were on this journey with me."

Her journey at the University of Tulsa is defined by firsts, friendships, and the kind of memories that stick. "I have some special memories from those times," she said—moments that continue to shape her life long after her playing days.

A Championship That Changed Everything
Of all her memories at Tulsa, one stands above the rest: the program's first conference title in 2006. "It surely was the first Conference title in program history in 2006," Silva said. "When you accomplish something like this, you know your name is written in the history of the school. We had such a nice group and had so much fun."

That season wasn't just about wins; it was about a belief that something historic was possible. The team's chemistry—on and off the court—made the accomplishment even sweeter. "We had such a nice group and had so much fun," she said, reflecting on a team that blended talent with genuine joy.

A Coach's Influence and a Lifelong Lesson
Silva credits much of her growth to her head coach. "Coach Ed Allen surely had a huge impact on my life," she said. "He was a very demanding coach and didn't accept anything less than our 100% every day. This helped build a strong work ethic."

After graduating, Allen gave her a chance to see the game from a different angle. "He also gave me an opportunity to work as an assistant coach at TU after I graduated," Silva said. "This experience helped me to find out what I would like to pursue as a career."

Today, that foundation has carried her around the world. "Nowadays, I work with sports management and have been to three Olympic Games," she said, proof that the lessons learned in Tulsa extend far beyond the gym.

The Secret to Success? Culture and Camaraderie
Ask Silva what made her era special, and she'll tell you it wasn't just talent—it was a mindset. "I believe the secret to our success back then was the hard-working culture we built," she said. "We truly believed no one was practicing more than us."

The team's international flair also played a role. "As five foreign players, we brought different perspectives and ways to play the game, and the coaching staff was humble enough to get the best out of us," she said. That blend of cultures and commitment created a team identity built on grit and openness.

Finding Home Far From Home
For Silva, Tulsa was more than a place to play volleyball—it was a place to grow. "Coming to the University of Tulsa truly changed my life," she said. "Being an international student-athlete is very challenging and taught me how to be resilient and disciplined. The professors and academic advisors were very important throughout those years."

The community embraced her from day one. "Being a girl from Rio de Janeiro, the Tulsa community helped me feel at home for all those years," she said. That sense of belonging is what she remembers most. "Walking through campus, people knew me by name, and professors would come to our games at the Reynolds Center—it truly felt like home."

Advice to the Next Generation
Silva hopes today's student-athletes appreciate the journey. "Do not take for granted all the moments you live as a student-athlete," she said. "We learn how to deal with adversity all the time and it surely makes us stronger to face real life."

She also wants them to remember the joy that comes with the grind. "We were very happy in our locker room! All the music, dance, laughing… I will never forget those moments," Silva said.

Now a Hall of Famer, Silva's story is a reminder that championship banners and career milestones are built on daily effort, shared laughter, and a community that feels like home."
