Andrew Cleary was named the Director of Athletic Performance for the Tulsa men's basketball program in October 2015.
Cleary comes to Tulsa with 16 years of experience working as a strength and conditioning coach in the NBA. He worked with the Washington Wizards, Portland Trailblazers and Orlando Magic, and served as the personal strength and conditioning coach of Basketball Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen and former tennis world No. 1 player Monica Seles.
Cleary worked as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Washington Wizards from 2004-14. He developed all strength training programs, and tailored the programs to each player to improve performance. He served as Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Portland Trailblazers from 2001-02, where he developed on-court conditioning programs for low-minute players and administered flexibility and nutritional programs for the team. From 1998-99, he was an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Orlando Magic, where he mainly maintained professional fitness levels of injured reserve players during the season.
From 1997-98, Cleary served as the personal strength and conditioning coach for nine-time Grand Slam singles champion, Monica Seles. From 2004-04, he also served as the personal strength and conditioning coach for Scottie Pippen, a six-time NBA Champion and seven-time All-Star.
Cleary is a certified strength and conditioning specialist with the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), holds certification with National Association of Sports Medicine (CES & PES), Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT), and Resistance Training Specialist Mastery (RTSM).
Cleary earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and psychology from Lewis-Clark State University in 1994. He received his master’s degree in exercise science from Boise State in 1996. He and his wife, Patrice, have a son: Hunter.
