Cliff Marsland spent seven years on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane tennis coaching staff.
Marsland first was an assistant coach for the women's program for two years and the 2020-21 season marked his fifth season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Tulsa men's program.
Left the program following the 2020-21 campaign.
In two years with the women's team, Marsland helped lead the Hurricane to back-to-back American Athletic Conference championships in 2015 and 2016, while reaching the program’s best national ranking in nearly a decade when the Hurricane had a 2015-16 in-season rank of No. 14. The Tulsa women posted an overall 22-5 record in the 2015-16 season, advanced to the NCAA Championships Second Round and finished the campaign 24th in the final ITA rankings.
In his first four seasons as the men’s tennis assistant coach, Marsland has helped lead the Hurricane to a combined 45 wins, to go along with multiple all-conference honors and an American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year selection. He also coached Kody Pearson to the ITA Regional Championship in the fall of 2019.
Marsland played his collegiate tennis at Tulsa from 2010-14, garnering vast honors along the way. He was part of both the Conference USA singles and doubles first-teams for all four seasons as part of the Golden Hurricane.
As a senior, Marsland was named C-USA Spring Tennis Athlete of the Week four times while being named a C-USA Academic Team selection for the fourth time in four years. In the 2012-13 season, Marsland was named the ITA Central Region Arthur Ashe Jr. Sportsmanship Award winner and placed on the Tulsa Ultimate Team.
During his sophomore season in 2011-12, he was named NCAA Doubles All-America, reaching a career-best doubles ranking of No. 3 while winning the ITA Central Region Doubles and finishing runner-up in the ITA National Indoor Doubles Championship. Marsland was a part of the 2011 team that reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament, the best finish by a squad in program history. As a freshman he was part of a doubles team that was named Outstanding Doubles Team of the 2011 C-USA Championship.
Prior to arriving at Tulsa as an assistant coach with the women’s team, Marsland spent time as the Junior Programs Director at Tennis Excellence Blue Gum Park Tennis Club in Brentwood, Western Australia, managing grassroots level group coaching, high performance academy squads and private lessons. Marsland also conducted individual and group coaching sessions while designing tennis specific strength and conditioning programs as a coach as Next Step Tennis Academy.
Marsland earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2013 and his master’s degree in education studies in 2016, both from The University of Tulsa.
