Kerry Hassall joined the Tulsa rowing staff prior to the 2015-16 season and is in her seventh season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. In her six seasons, Tulsa’s rowing team has medaled 257 boats, including 86 gold-medal finishes.
Hassall came to Tulsa from Washington State where she served as an assistant novice coach in 2015. She also previously worked with the Tees Rowing Club (2007-12), where she collaborated with Egglescliffe School to help launch “Project Oarsome”, a program founded through Great British Rowing, which aimed to interest youth from local and state schools to participate in rowing.
Hassall also assisted in coaching Teesside University (2008-09) and supported the affiliation of Stockton Rugby Club and Tees Rowing Club, where club members would row during their off season (2007-08).
Hassall was a four-year letterwinner at Washington State, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in history in 2013 and her master’s degree in education, with a specialization in sport management, in 2015. She earned all-academic honors in each of her four seasons.
While completing her master’s degree, Hassall taught an undergraduate class at Washington State on recreational sport programing, as well as worked as a research assistant. She also presented at the IACS 2015 8th Summit on Communication and Sport with results from her thesis entitled: “Rowing Race: A Qualitative Study of the Effects of Socialization, Education and Mass Media on the Rowing Experiences of Female Racial Minority Rowers.”
Kerry is married to Jonathan Steinkirchner and they have a son, William David.
