Rodney Mott is in his eighth year at Tulsa and was promoted to Head Coach of Lightweight Rowing in September 2015. Previously, Mott served as an assistant coach, as well as boatman/rigger for the Golden Hurricane rowing team since his appointment in 2010. Mott oversees all lightweight rowing, and assists with the instruction of the novice and varsity crews, as well as oversees all the equipment that keeps the rowing team on the water and racing. Mott has been professionally involved in rowing for over 20 years.
During the 2016-17 season, the Golden Hurricane recorded 21 first-place finishes and medaled 63 boats. TU turned in a second-place finish at the American Athletic Conference Championship for the third-straight season, earning silver medals in the Varsity 4+, 2nd Varsity 4+, 3rd Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+. TU raced the Lightweight 4+ to a seventh-place finish and the Lightweight 8+ to a second-place Petite Final mark at the IRA National Championship.
Tulsa had 24 first-place marks and medaled 49 boats in the 2015-16 season. TU finished second in the American Athletic Conference Championship for the second-straight season, taking the top mark in the 2nd Varsity 4+, while the Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and 3rd Varsity 8+ all earned silver medals. The Golden Hurricane raced both a Lightweight 2x and Lightweight 4+ at the IRA National Championship, and advanced both boats to the Grand Finals for the first time in program history. TU claimed the Lawless Cup over SMU and Central Oklahoma, and dominated Kansas State, Creighton and MIT in duels.
During the 2014-15 season, Tulsa recorded 17 first-place marks and medaled 45 boats. The Golden Hurricane finished second in the American Athletic Conference Championship with a top mark in the 3rd Varsity 4+, while the Varsity 4+, 2nd Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+ boats all earned silver medals. TU took both a Lightweight 4+ and Lightweight 8+ to the IRA National Championship for the first time in school history, finishing second in the Petite Final in both events, won the Lawless Cup over SMU, and medaled four boats at the Knecht Cup. After the season, the team went to England to compete in the Reading Amateur Regatta and Women’s Henley Regatta.
In 2013-14, Mott assisted Tulsa to 23 first-place finishes and 69 medals in 10 regattas. The Lightweight 8+ finished second in the Petite Final at the IRA National Championship, the Varsity 4+ won a silver medal at the Conference USA Championship and the Hurricane went on to finish fourth in the league, the Varsity 8+ won the Lawless Cup and TU medaled four boats at the Knecht Cup.
During the 2012-13 season, Mott helped TU earn 24 first-place marks and medal 63 boats in 10 regattas. The Golden Hurricane’s Lightweight 8+ recorded a third-place finish at the Dad Vail Regatta and Knecht Cup, while the Lightweight 4+ also earned a bronze meal at the Knecht Cup. TU claimed the Lawless Cup and finished ninth in Conference USA.
Mott assisted the Golden Hurricane to 19 first-place marks, while 34 boats finished among the top three in eight regattas during the 2011-12 season. TU’s Lightweight 8+ won their event at the Head of the Hooch, while the Lightweight 2x and Novice 4+ captured top finishes at the Head of the Oklahoma. Tulsa once again claimed the Lawless Cup and finished fifth in Conference USA.
During the 2010-11 season, Mott helped coach TU to 22 first-place finishes and saw 57 boats medal in 11 regattas. The Golden Hurricane earned a sixth-place finish in the Lightweight 4+ at the IRA National Championship, medaled its first-ever boat at the Conference USA Championship as the Varsity 4+ picked up a bronze medal, and medaled all five boats at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association to tie for the women’s team trophy.
Before coming to Tulsa, Mott served as the Head Rowing Coach and Lecturer for the Physical Education Department at Vassar College for four years. During his tenure, Mott’s teams broke every team record in school history, and in the 2006-07 season, his team was ranked No. 13 in the country.
Mott previously served as head rowing coach at Willamette (1996-2006), Puget Sound (1989-1996) and North Idaho (1988-89), and was an assistant coach at Washington State (1988).
Mott received his degree in American Studies from Washington State in 1991. He has been a member of US Rowing since 1984 and a member of the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association since 1999. Mott holds a US Rowing Coaching Certification, Levels I, II, and III.
Mott and his wife, Tina, have one daughter, Makishi.
