Volleyball Squad Falls to Wahine

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa vollyeball was not the rollover opponent that everyone thought it would be in a three-game defeat to the top-ranked Wahine. Hawaii defeated Tulsa 15-5, 15-13, 15-8 in a WAC match at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Friday night.

Hawai'i used 20 kills to break open a 3-3 tie during the first game with only one error. Sophomore hitter Lilly Kahumoku recorded seven kills in the first stanza alone.

Game two was a different story, however. The Hurricane outhit UH, .212-.159, as the Wahine recorded 17 hitting errors. Tulsa could not make the most of the situation, giving up 28 kills in the process.

The Hurricane did outhit UH in the third game as well, .298-.294. However the Wahine again recorded more kills, 24-19. Sophomore setter Margaret Vakasausau provided the spark with 20 assists in the third game for Hawaii.

Senior setter Shannon Smith did set a new high for assists in a single season. With 40 on the evening, Smith broke Mendy Marsh's record of 1,103 which was set in 1996. Fellow senior Kristien Van Lierop added a team-high 13 kills, while sophomore Erin Carlisle recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs.

With the lose, Tulsa falls to 17-11, 3-10 in the WAC, on the season. The Wahine improve to 23-0 and 13-0 in the WAC. Hawaii has been No. 1 in the Volleyball Magazine poll for the past four weeks. The AVCA ranks UH at No. 2.

Tulsa will host Nevada on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
